The Conduit Storyline Trailer Released
« on: May 04, 2009, 05:08:15 PM »
The latest trailer asks "how can mankind fight a war the enemy has already won?"
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=18368

 While it's being touted as a major online multiplayer title on the Wii, the latest The Conduit trailer showcases the game's storyline. The Drudge have invaded Earth and with their invasion they bring about a web of conspiracy and mystery. As with the other trailers, this one shows even more All-Seeing Eye gameplay and high-end Wii graphics.

Hey hey, there actually IS some story to this game! Sweet.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

I actually think I'm going to get this without really giving a crap about the multiplayer. I'm intrigued by the sci-fi movie storyline they've got going on and from what I've played/seen, the gameplay seems pretty solid.
I really don't think I'm going to do much more than screw around with the multiplayer, but I don't think I'm going to be let down by this.

About fracking time...what took them so long?  Yeah, that trailer's actually good and makes me intrigued as to where they'll go in the game.  It kind of helps that this is by far their most professionally-assembled trailer yet, and doesn't just feel like a bunch of gameplay movies slapped together.  I have to admit, though, after all my years of watching Battlestar, I kept expecting him to make some cynical quip about the nature of humanity (something Romo Lampkin was fond of doing).

Very good trailer. I was pleased to hear Kevin Sorbo in it as well. From what I've heard the voice acting is actually quite good and doesn't sound "phoned" in.

What I don't understand, though, is why this trailer wasn't the first one they put out.  Story; character; and setting up the world are the foundations of a good gaming experienc and everything else gets built up from that foundation, and it's been my sticking point for months that they had been failing to convey that foundation in an interesting or unique manner.  If they had started with this trailer and then built their way up with the other videos over the past few months, I'd probably have been kinder to the game and I doubt I'm alone in that sense.

I think we went over this before, the previous trailers were made more for those that have been following the game. This one is to kick start their overall ad campaign. Believe it or not you don't need to hype something for months, in fact the perfect period to hype something is a month. It isn't so long that people grow board of it but it isn't so short you can't garner hype for it. It makes perfect business sense you give the longtime followers of the conduit all the "behind the scenes" stuff first and get them solidified then try to get the masses within a month or so of launch.

I was more interested in the technical aspects than the story so I was pleased with the trailers before this one. However, this story trailer has me very interested in a campaign that I thought would be more of a throwaway.

Everyone should just admit they're sold on this trailer because of the chorus.

Personally I think more games should advertise with movie like trailers, and release them in theaters & on DVD's as previews before movies.
But I could've sworn I seen that trailer last week, thought I even posted in in the other thread... hmmm. Oh well.

More like I was the one late because we had a bunch of Namco Bandai previews to handle and I handled a lot of news stories last week.

Story; character; and setting up the world are the foundations of a good gaming experienc and everything else gets built up from that foundation

Wow. No. Gameplay is first above all else, which constitutes the majority of what they've been talking about.

Without a solid world setup, though, nothing you do in the game matters.  This is a two-way street here.

can i disagree with you both and just say Visuals. visuals are the first thing you show off first.

If it was story, they would have released storyboard and if it were gameplay, they would have showed the wireframe gourad shaded(?) basic build that they started the gameplay on. But they didn't. they waited until the game was LOOKING GOOD enough to actually show off because the first thing you show off is the visuals.

now you two can argue about what they should show next. :P

If visuals were what primarily mattered first, the PS3 would be dominating this console generation and the Wii would be selling about as well as the N64.  We'd also never see previews based on Alpha builds, but that commonly happens.

Truth be told, there's a middle-ground between the 3 that the game has to have, but I find that games that have a solid; established; and developed game world from the get-go tend to turn out the best in the end.

The middle ground is NONADVERTISING, pioneered by today's innovative publishers such as Capcom, Namco, Ubi, and most of all, Nintendo.

Visuals hook you though.  If an FPS looks like ass I don't really care about the rest, because nobody's going to wildly innovate the genre at this point.

How about competent FPS play that involves a more literal method of aiming?

Tell that to Alexej Pazhitnov.

Story, setting, etc is an additional hook but if the basic glue, the gameplay, that's holding it all together fails then the whole thing falls apart because no matter how great your setting, the player has to deal with the gameplay to see it.
