The Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing wants a future with one DSi per person, but also one with a Wii being needed for DS demos.

1UP interviewed Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, at the midnight launch of the DSi at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles about the DSi's past and future, and more.

When questioned about the five month difference between the Japanese and North American launch of the DSi, Dunaway said that the sales situation are different in each country, citing that in Japan one in every two households owns a DS while in America one in every four households owns a DS. According to Dunaway, the eventual goal is to have Nintendo President Satoru Iwata's dream of "one DSi per person."

She dodged around the prospect of demos on the DSi Shop, though, saying that the "Express" DSiWare titles are like demos and that Nintendo is "focusing on the [WiiÂ’s] Nintendo Channel as the primary source for getting demos."

As for DSiWare, Dunaway is a big fan: "I like the idea that every Monday morning, I'm going to be able to go into the DSi Shop, [and] see what's new."

She also talked about the state of Club Nintendo, saying that they "are always looking for new Club Nintendo rewards," and that "it's a program that we think has a whole lot of potential."

I do want to see more stuff offered as rewards from Club Nintendo. I want to see the other DS games from the Japanese club.

I don't usually use the Nintendo Channel demos but then again I didn't reinstall it until recently when the storage solution made it more practical for that big channel to be allowed on my precious flash memory restricted Wii.

I really want to see the Golden Wii Wheel being brought over to America. It might look a bit tacky, but damn does it look awesome!

Also, if you guys saw two versions of the same story that's because we were having problems posting this, so my apologies.

Can we blame Pap for the problems? ;)

Tacky gold stuff is what I live for. I remember trying so hard to get those gold N64 controllers with their Mario Kart 64 challenge (I think you had to beat Mario Speedway in under 1 minute 30 seconds). After doing it over and over again for hours I FINALLY did it but stupid Nintendo never gave me a gold controller. It bothered me so much that just a year ago I bought a gold controller on eBay, so TAKE THAT NINTENDO POWER.

I want that Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack Nintendo gave Japanese Club Nintendo members. That was not one the normal items though, that was one of the gifts they could choose at the end of the year if they reached Platinum status. Maybe that will be the gift (or one of them) that we get?

I hope that Club Nintendo offers up some games because I'm not really into any of that extra stuff, unless it's really interesting, cheap, and involves Mario characters.

The standard gold controller is fairly common, you'll just have to wait until one pops up at a good price; I wouldn't pay more than $20 for it. I got mine for $10 but that was a pretty rare deal.

The gold Nintendo Power 100 controller would be a lot more difficult to find. I'm not sure how many of them there are; I think there are more than 100 but definitely less than 1,000.

1UP: How about in your house? Is it one per person?

CD: Oh my god, I think we have... five per person?

That sounds almost familiar...

1UP: You were talking about getting new stuff every Monday, and you guys do the Wii-kly Update press releases, which is now the Nintendo Download Report. Out of curiosity, is there a chance that you could modify the scheduling of that a little bit? I admit I'm sort of asking as a gamer, but in Japan, they get an idea of what's coming out on WiiWare and Virtual Console like a month ahead. Is there a chance to get an extra idea of what's coming out, even a day before?

CD: It's certainly something that the team has been doing a lot of brainstorming about. It's something that us, our developers -- we all want to get as much awareness of WiiWare games and DSiWare games as possible. So we're certainly talking about different ways to get more exposure.

Yes, please.

1UP: When's the next wave of Club Nintendo rewards coming?

CD: Oh, we're always looking for new Club Nintendo rewards! We just brought a new guy on to manage the program, who I'm very excited about. It's a program that we think has a whole lot of potential.

Why the feck wasn't this guy me?  If anyone should be in charge of a Nintendo loyalty program and picking out the Nintendo stuff to give away, it should have been me... :(

Quote
CD: Yeah, [and] one of the things that we did was give Club Nintendo premium members a chance to preview the DSi early at GameStop, so we're going to keep looking for those kind of surprising things to do to reward our most loyal fans.

Yeah... most loyal fans - why wasn't I invited? >:(
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

She is talking BS about GameStop. I have been a Platinum member of Club Nintendo since January but I never got any notice from them about the DSi preview.

You had to live near one of the stores that was going to have the preview. It wasn't every GameStop, not even enough stores to give every state a viewing.

It's nice that she can go into the DSiWare shop every Monday and find something new but why couldn't Europeans find anything new last Friday?

I've talked to people who lived within 10 miles of a GameStop that was participating and they didn't get an invite either.

If you talk trash about Nintendo games like WiiMusic then you don't get a letter  :D

So half of Japan and a quarter of America has them. That's a lot of DS systems.
