Everybody loves awesome and many games are happy to provide it but... Where does the awesome come from? I think there are three sources of awesome with different qualities:
The player: This kind of awesome is felt when the player feels he has excelled at something, often by completing something really hard or executing some difficult sequence flawlwessly or whatever. Basically the feeling "**** yeah, I kick the ass!" and the greatest euphoria games have to offer.
The player character: Some characters just ooze awesome, be it Dante from DMC or Kratos from GoW. Everything they do looks awesome and some of it is felt by the player too but in the end, anyone can look awesome when controlling an awesome character. It gives a good feeling but doesn't hold a candle to the above.
The enemies: Well, this is less awesome. The enemies are hardly putting up a fight and you can win the most "difficult" fights easily. Completely loses the sense of any awesomeness being imparted by the player, the weapons might seem awesome for a minute but after a while the realization sets in that winning is nothing special in this game.
Just a random thought, not founded in any serious research.
