Topic: Would it be all that great if Nintendo was number one?

If Nintendo was in the lead in the console wars, would it really be that great? I mean, everyone you know would have a GameCube and you could no longer rub it in their faces all the great games you get to play  

What do you think? What do you think it would be like if Nintendo was #1 again  and how would you feel?

Since my self esteem or my overall pleasure in life is not related to the position of my video game console in the so called "console war", it wouldn't change much, other than the fact i'd have the chance to play more 3rd party games (there sure are a couple I'd like to see on the Cube) and that I could be assured that my console would stand long enough to have a proper return on my investment (i.e.: not another Jaguar, 3DO or Dreamcast).

I don't want to be rude, but when I read a thread like this it takes me 18 years behind, when I was arguing in the schoolyard that the NES was better than the SMS, and I really wanted to have the best console. It seemed like at that age I needed to be conforted and approoved in my choices, needed to be in the winner camp, like all those kids who root for a sport team only because they are the champions.

Again I guess I'm probably one of the older user here even though I'm not that old, the majority of you looking to be around 15 (just guessing). I guess some things change with age, since nobody at work will tease me on having a "kiddy console" like it could happen in the schoolyard or hanging out between classes in highschool, and since teenagers just have this terrible need to be cool.

My friends don't really care if I'd rub my GCN in their faces...they know GCN is at the bottom with sales and they are more than happy with their Xboxs and PS2s...

Maybe in yor country yours friends Xboxs sells very well and the can rub it in your face, but in another countries Xbox sucks hard, like here, if you have a xbox you are  somekind of loser who loves microsoft and bill gates

Being number one would be that great, because we'd have MORE games and MORE support.  I love Nintendo, and I can't imagine buying another system, but I'd like to have some more third party support, and some freaking RPGs.

You know, I probably couldn't care less.  You see, it's not like Nintendo is losing money, and they won't anytime soon.  So that means they won't drop out of consoles (like their president said in the first place--note my signature).  I like to play games.  It's not my job to study the market and make choices depending on where the companies stand.  As long as Nintendo continues to produce the incredible games that they always have, I'll be fine with third, because even in third they are doing pretty damn good, game-quality wise.

And who gets to do that now?  Anyone whose face I would want to rub it in always uses the universal comeback of "Nintendo sucks."  A good of deal of people don't care if I can play Zelda because they've decided that Zelda sucks.

Anyway I would like Nintendo to be number one again just so I can get Nintendo's first party games and all of the best third party games on one console.  The SNES remains my favourite system ever because of that.  Plus with Nintendo as the market leader the casual gaming crowd would actually like, you know, good games instead of liking only sports games and GTA like Sony has trained them to like.

However I would still want some sort of strong competitor like Sega was to Nintendo during the 16 bit wars.  That was ideal because you had two competitors that both had a decent chance of being number one and as a result both companies had to keep the quality up to compete.  Whenever there's a very clear "winner" the market leader tends to slack off somewhat.  Sony for example relies entirely on third parties and as a developer doesn't do anything to push the envelope because with such a huge lead they don't have to make their own first party killer app to compete.  Third parties do it for them.  Even Nintendo didn't really start cranking out amazing games until Sega started catching up to them.  Back in the NES days for every killer app like Zelda you had "filler" games like Baloon Fight and Mach Rider that were okay but nothing special.

You need two strong leaders.  A Pepsi and Coke if you will.  It doesn't even matter if Nintendo was number two as long as it was a close number two like the Sega Genesis.

Really, though, I see no DIS advantages to being number 1. It means more money for Nintendo, bigger, better, and more polished games for us, and like Ian pointed out, a ton of great 3rd-party titles. The ONLY downside I could possibly see to that is there being too many games for little ol' me to buy.

One of the reasons I wouldn't like them to be in first is because a lot of people I know would probably have Nintendo's system and wouldn't want to play it with me since they have it and got tired of it. I wouldn't mind getting more games and Nintendo doing great.

Not saying this would happen, but so many people I know have a PS2 and it's really annoying.

You know its kinda interesting...

I really prefer the Gamecube in console quality much more then the PS2 (I dont have an XBOX).  But some of the PS2 titles really hook me in.  Rumble Racing for example.  The graphics really are not as good as I would like them to be but the fun factor is pretty high.  Right now thats the only game that I cant stop playing and it has me cussing at my tv quite a lot.  Zelda GCN simply put is one of the most beautiful games Ive ever had the good fortune to play.  Its easy, but I really have to say, Nintendo makes exceptional games.  Video game art comes to mind.  While Nintendo may not sell as well or have as many games I feel they really have equal footing with both the PS2 and XBOX.  I play Nintendo for Nintendo games, and the PS2 for PS2 games.  If a game I want is multiplatform, my first instinct would be to buy the GCN version.  Rocky is a good example.  Not the best boxing game, but difference in quality is very obvious between the systems.

So If Nintendo is #1?  Ahh... I dont really care.  I broke out my NES last night and played Mike Tyson's Punch Out.  Funny enough, it still entertained me quite a bit.  I guess what Im saying is all the systems have their peaks and valleys and personally I dont really think any one is "better" then another.  PS2 has the games... but Id like to "see" better quality from them as far as visuals.  Cube has great visuals and polish, Id just like to see more games.  XBOX... well beautiful games but I really feel most games that I have seen on XBOX I would rather see on my computer.  I dont know... something with XBOX just dosent seem right to me.  I just cant pinpoint it.  Maybe that will change in the future.

In any event...  try using one of your old systems for a while...  NES or GENESIS... and then go right back to your newer systems.

The advancement of the video game industry in the last 10 years is staggering.  Thinking about Zelda II compared to Wind Waker or the old Sonic games compared to the Dreamcast versions... It just amazes me.  As far as #1... well as long as things keep moving along the way they are, I think all the systems are deserving of the top spot in one way or another.

I am surprised no one  mentioned the  best benefit we  would gain if they were leading the race.

Blockbuster and other rental places would carry  100's more titles then what they do now if Nintendo was the leading console.

At  most rental places you  will never find a game  worth a damn to rent for the cube but they will have the same title out for X-box or ps-2, for whatever reason though they will not have the cube  version.

if nintendo were #1 again they would get more support, especially in the rpg collumn
i mean they are getting some good ones now (tales of symphonia, skies, ffcc, giftpia)
but if they were #1 in consoles sold they would get the rpg support that the ps2 gets now
also other 3rd parties would come to gamecube and probably develope for it even more so than now
so i guess it can help a little, but to me it really doesnt matter
i am doing fine right now with all the nintendo titles keeping me busy now

It would be great that Nintendo became number one again, but as Ian Sane said they would need a close competitor. I don't know about other folks here, but honestly I think the 16 bit era was THE Golden Age of video gaming. You had two competitors who not only had capable hardware but also could support that hardware on their own with fantastic software. THAT was a console war. This thing we are going through now is a joke, a joke that unfortunately has Nintendo and Sega as the butt of it.

It used to be quite easy to pick up a decent game, but now we are thumbing through aisle after aisle of mediocre titles. I know that since the beginning of the VG industry there has been crap. I also suspect that I might be looking at the past through rose colored glasses, but seriously I don't remember things being this bad, at least not during the 16 bit days.

In the end, I happy with where Nintendo's at. I just think they need to redefine their model of business because I don't see Sony going down anytime soon unless the PS3 flat out does not deliver on the specs and games, or the industry goes through another crash.

It wouldnt really matter to me if Nintendo was number 1 or not in hardware or software. They will always be #1 with me. But it would be nice to see Nintendo get more third party support.

Wouldnt matter to me if Nintendo was #1 or #50, in fact I could care less if any of the big 3 console makers went out of business even.
There will always be a game or 2 somewhere that I enjoy regardless of who the hells makes it or what I have to play it on.

OK...calm down...I was talking about the USA, where the Xbox is selling more than GCN.
