Simple DS: The Custom Tank
« on: March 06, 2008, 02:05:58 PM »
Got this game as an import, it's quite good, much more than I'd have expected from a simple series game. It's kinda like driving the Metal Slug in the game of the same name, you have a tank with a cannon and a rotatable machinegun (both can be replaced with other kinds of weapons if you find the right parts), hop from platform to platform, shoot other tanks (including real tanks from different eras all on the same map...), etc. The Custom part means that you can replace parts on your tank with different ones, from what I see that's turret, sidearm, body and threads. There's many parts that are just different powerlevels of the same thing but still some variety, including indirect fire, homing missiles, spread guns and so on. You get multiple base tanks that each have their own compatibilities and part lists and you can level them up (not too much of an effect from what I've seen). It gets hard pretty quickly but extra lives are really plentiful.

Seems to have multicard two player coop but I can't test that.

Why don't they release these things in America? Gosh.

Dunno. I know the PS2 Simple games weren't released because of SCEA but I have no idea what's keeping the DS or Wii games away (or Super Control Mecha MG, for that matter)

D3Publisher has a US branch now, they could do it if they wanted... but D3 Publisher is acting like they want to become a regular publisher though, so maybe their US branch will turn their nose at this.

... Conspiracy Entertainment should do it!

They publish regular games in Japan too, stuff like Bangai-O Spirits, Dead Head Fred and Dark Sector.

Heh, the game is short, only 3 worlds. Quite solid otherwise, they could have made more levels and stuff and sold it at full price.

Simple Series games have been localized by various clown meat publishers for Europe since the original PlayStation, but since D3 set up their own European HQ and started doing some of the PS2 ones themselves, every other publisher has stopped. So I guess D3's all NAAWWWW now, nobody else can touch them, even though they're slacking off pretty hardcore lately.

The Simple games never existed in America on PSone or PS2 because Sony blocked them (though I believe a whopping three or so managed to slip through). One of the DS games made it over (Break 'Em All ie; Simple DS Series Vol. 4: The Block Kuzushi) by D3 America, but after that they seemed to get all pissy about localizing anymore and started focusing on crappy cartoon licensed games. Maybe they won't let anyone else touch them much like D3 Europe. :( Because I'm sure other publishers would have given these a crack by now, the Wii Simple Series have been turning out surprisingly decent so far, and there's a handful of good DS ones (like the one this thread is based on~).

(D3 America DID try and get Oneechanbara Vortex for 360 out though, shortly after Earth Defence Force 2017, but it was rejected... perhaps they'll try again with the Wii version since Nintendo's much more relaxed!)
