Full Character Roster Discussion (SPOILERS)
« on: February 16, 2008, 12:19:44 AM »
...I'm glad we only had two 3rd parties, but it's mainly because of looking at the travesty that is SC4.

This way, the SSB series still has some room to grow. If we had 3-5 3rd party characters, I get the feeling that the next SSB would need to "one up" Brawl because people would complain otherwise.

If each SSB game adds 1-2 3rd parties and that's it, I think it would be for the best so as not to lose sight of the focus of the Nintendo characters.

At first, I was a tad annoyed that a third or fourth third party character was not included. But then, I realized that its even more annoying that some NINTENDO character got ignored and pushed aside.

I would've preferred more new Nintendo IP characters to be in Brawl over third party characters. They need the spotlight more than the third parties.

Naturally, Travis Touchdown would be the most awesomely amazing inclusion for the next SSB game.

I don't necessarily mind having only two 3rd party characters. Rather, if 33 characters with clones was the best Nintendo could do, then I'd rather they dip into the 3rd party pool for new challengers.

As I've said before, I always thought Smash Bros. could be done with only Nintendo characters and to Brawl's credit, there aren't any glaring omissions like in Melee (Wario, Pit, and Dedede are finally getting their due). Still, I can name at least 5 Nintendo characters that could have made good roster additions.

I really think that depends on whether Sakurai is involved in Smash Bros. again. Nintendo won't let the series/concept die with or without Sakurai. However, without Sakurai, I expect the adventure mode to be scrapped in which case, more characters, stages and whatnot would be included.

I do not think we need to turn this into a complaint thread about the final line up.  The truth is, the lineup of characters is incredible (with the except of a lack of female characters.)

However, I wish that Nintendo had not revealed that Snake and Sonic were going to be in the game at all...it would have been a better surprise, and would not have lead to huge speculation for possible secret characters.

I would have loved for most of the entire Melee lineup to unlocked with only 2 of the new Brawl Nintendo characters unlocked.  And had more surprises to discover.

Pokemon Trainer,
Olimar,
Ike,
Diddy Kong,
Lucas

These should have all been Locked away to provide more surprises:

Luigi,
Captain Falcon,
Nes,
Falco

Should have been unlocked from the beginning.

This would have provided much more excitement and would have definitely help prevent the disappointed nature of the final lineup.

As for 3rd party characters in the game.  I woud have done 5 3rd party characters, and I would have them all hidden away through event battles or time released.

Mega Man,
Bomber Man,
Snake,
Sonic --- Possibly Include Tails as a Clone with Gliding potential.
Simon Belmont

Then it would have been fun to have an Event Battle Called Brawl Crashers were you fought all 3rd party characters.

Konami is Hudson Soft's largest shareholder. I know you really, REALLY wanted Bomberman in the game, but basically having three Konami characters out of the the five 3rd party additions would be pretty unfair to the rest of the gaming world, especially since Konami has been pimpslapping Nintendo the past few years with their crummy support. I know it doesn't really matter at this point since 2 is the magic number. I'm just saying.......

I actually think it's a shame that Konami didn't throw in some non-MGS assist trophies into the mix. It'd be a lot of fun to have an assist trophy that makes sprite versions of the Contra guys run through the screen shooting everyone in sight, for instance. Simon wouldn't be a bad trophy either. Same with Sega, although their non-Sonic stuff for Nintendo systems isn't quite as iconic or nostalgic, but a Chu Chu Rocket or Jet Set Radio assist trophy would be awesome.

Castlevania is irrelevant.  Konami just THINKS they can save MGS from the same fate.

True, but when people think of Hudson do they think EA.  No they think of Hudson because they are run as two seperate entities.

Bomberman and Mega Man were the two 3rd party characters that deserved MOST to be apart of Brawl.  They are the two most recognizable 3rd party characters that have been on Nintendo systems since the 8 bit era.

Truthfully, I believe Snake should have never been apart of the game series, and would gladly take him out for Bomberman or Mega Man.  Simon Belmont can be thrown away as well.  So I think if we had 3 it would have been nice to have:

Bomberman
Mega Man
Sonic  ---with Tails as a clone that can float, and have another different move or two.

Simon Belmont and Castlevania are dead.  They don't have the same importance or culture impact as before.

MegaMan doesn't either.

For that matter, neither does Bomberman.

The whole point (or at least a big chunk of it) is nostalgia. No matter how much Castlevania sucks now, Simon Belmont and Megaman would still fit into Smash Bros as well as, for instance, the Ice Climbers.
