 LEGENDARY SEGA CHARACTERS PUT A WACKY SPIN ON SEGA SUPERSTARS TENNIS

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (October 18, 2007) – SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced SEGA Superstars™ Tennis, starring some of the most recognized characters in the SEGA universe playing on some of the most unusual courts and  outrageous settings imaginable.  SEGA Superstars Tennis will be released in early 2008 on the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system, the  Wii™ home video game system and Nintendo DS™.

SEGA Superstars Tennis includes over 15 playable SEGA characters – like Sonic The Hedgehog, AiAi from Super Monkey Ball fame, Ulala of Space Channel 5 and Amigo from Samba De Amigo, each of whom have their own unique attributes, and superstar tennis skills. The game’s arcade style matches are played out on courts based on environments from Sega games of the past such as the lush tropics of Sonic’s Green Hill Zone or the street fair fiesta of Amigo’s Carnival Park to name a few. In addition, there are a host of cameos and other surprises for fans of Sega games. Details on the gameplay modes and online play will be revealed in the coming months.

“Sega Superstars Tennis delivers a fun and fresh new take on tennis," said Rick Naylor, Director of Marketing for SEGA of America. “From its pick-up-and-play arcade action to its exciting roster of fan-favorite characters and settings, Sega Superstars Tennis has something for everyone."

SEGA Superstars Tennis is being developed by Sumo Digital Ltd., the developer behind the acclaimed Virtua Tennis™ series. For more information please visit www.sega.com.

Hey, they've got the Virtual Tennis developer behind this, that gives them a pretty good shot at not sucking, though I'll probably buy Top Spin instead of this.

My hope, a hope that is almost certainly not going to be what happens, is that Nintendo's influence will not only make Mario & Sonic at the Olympics good, but be what turns Sega around and into a force to be reckoned with again. What can I say, I love Sega and I'll remain optimistic forever that they can come back from this.

I want a real Space Channel 5 game, thank you.

Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

Mario and gang should be in this game.  They should keep it going for all future character sports games.

I've had this hope since the controller was revealed, except in a different way. I thought that the innovation would spark something in SEGA, and since so many of their franchises (especially the arcadey-style ones) are perfectly suited to the controller, their game quality would turn around.

Think about it - Panzer Dragoon, NiGHTS, arcade racers, light gun games, Samba de Amigo, Shenmue, sports games etc etc. So far they've actually gone ahead with quite a few of these projects, but unfortunately they aren't looking too hot.

I'm holding out for Panzer Dragoon - it will be announced sooner or later, and it will be awesome.

Not the Virtua Tennis announcement I was looking for, but it'll do. Now if they can get the Wii controls right...

This game is VERY multiplatform, which means they're less likely to nail Wii controls

So, while we're on Sonic/SEGA, anyone know what happens to Bioware's Sonic RPG now that they've been bought by EA?

I think the best way to go about this for EA is to treat Bioware like they treat (or at least used to treat) Maxis. Don't mess with what they have going, when they come up with an idea give them full financial support, don't restructure the businesses too much and let them run their own operation. Then sit back until it's time to take a cut of the massive profits from their amazing games.
