Need help buying a new tv
« on: April 22, 2008, 07:40:57 PM »
Sorry guys, I couldn't find the old thread, I was planning on just looking through there for ideas.

Anyway, except Chinese martial arts and Nintendo, I don't know anything about anything. So I need help in finding a good HD television, any suggestions on brands and what ever else I should know about?

Plasma, HDMI, Sony/Panasonic, biggest screen size you can afford, that is really all you need to know.

Plasma has really been good to me, its cheaper than LCD and just as good as quality.  Sharp, Samsung, and Sony are all up there as the cream of the crop although Sony is priced way above the other two even though Sharp is considered THE BEST in HD tech out there.  Right now Plasma wise you could score a 42-47 inch screen for around 1000-1300 bucks.

If you want a TV with no lag, no ghosting, little possibility of burn-in, deep blacks, and all around the best picture possible, you only have one choice: CRT.

>50" range: LED DLPs from 2007 and on are wonderful.

<50" range: look at LCDs and Plasma.

And don't buy Sony cuz I want their electronics empire to crumble.

Nope, not bad, AWESOME. I just bought this one -> Samsung HLT6187SAX 61-inch Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV. Honestly I couldn't be happier with it. Beautiful, beautiful color and super crisp display. It seems to be more now but I paid $1385.

I love DLPs.  If you're getting a large TV, the price and quality are amazing.

How do you guys feel about Olevia?

They seem to make some nice TVs with a great price as per Newegg's customer reviews:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889022036

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889022070

You'll see several people have used them for gaming and a couple even mentioned using it with the Wii.  The only cons seem to be cumbersome menu, slow channel switching and only one component jack.

Does anyone have any comments on lastability?  I would want an LCD tv to last about 6 years, is that to much to ask?

LOL well I don't need a 50" and up TV! :P  Alright well I think these TVs must be pretty good. I've been reading about them and there are few people using them successfully with Wiis.

Olevia and LG were both created to make a significantly cheaper brand of LCD or Plasma television set.  Both companies set out to make top quality T.V.s that rivaled popular brands to basically steal their customers.  Its a good idea company wise but its taken them awhile to get GOOD recognition in the market.  It has made them tons of money by being the cheaper alternative but some people still view them as lower brands.  I almost bought an LG LCD tv before I bought my Samsung Plasma, but a few of my friends own LGs and love them.  I think my uncle has an Olevia and loves it as well.

Just know this, purchasing a tv like that from Newegg is a very serious risky thing.  The moment you sign the paper from the delivery guy accepting the tv, its not Newegg's problem anymore.  This means if you open that box and your tv wont work or has a dead pixel or any other issue, you have to deal with the company themselves.

I personally was too scared to buy from Newegg because of that policy so I ended up buying my set at Fry's Electronics.   Their policy is an open box 30 day policy meaning you can return it within the first 30 days of purchase for any reason, even if you just dont like it.  When you are spending well over a grand money to me becomes precious so I like to make sure I have my back covered just in case.  Just a lil friendly advice from your local Darkheart.

Thanks Darkheart. I will more than likely tip the truck drive if he lets me un-box and plug it in.  I knew about that Nazi of a return policy.  Pretty damn stupid.

Aren't LG big in the states? They pretty much dominate consumer electronics over here.
