What ever happened to the SD Memory card?
« on: March 29, 2003, 10:59:22 AM »
Is Nintendo ever going to come out with the adapter to use SD cards for memory cards? The memory cards they offer are about 20$ each but they are not even close to the size the ps2 memory cards and they are about 30$.  Right now I have 5 memory cards and I only have 13 GC games, my cousin who has a PS2 has 18 games and 1 memory card, and it really gets annoying(finding and changing the memory card) and expensive, it feels like they are trying to milk out everything in your wallet.

You have 251's...right?  If so, its time you start erasing obsolete files.  I have two 59's and I'm making it OK.

Well i have sports games and Animal crossing and these take up large quantities of blocks, but so does my cousin but he still has 1 ps2 memory card for all his games.  Also i did delete files i dont need, but this did not make much of a difference.

Memory cards i have are a 251(Rest of my games), 128(NFL2k3, Timesplitters), 59(Animal Crossing), 59(Animal Crossing), 59(RE0/1).

No offense, but that's insane.  There's no way you need that many memory cards.  I have exactly two memory cards, and I am sitting fine.

Memory Card 251:  Almost 3 pages of saved games.  I still have 54 blocks, and I can delete a good chunk of it, as there are games I will never play again on the card.

Memory Card 59:  Animal Crossing.

And just so you know, the SD Cards weren't for the purpose of saved games.  I gathered that it was more of a 64DD type deal, where the SD Cards would function as a hard drive to be used by the game engine, rather than saved games.

Here is my proof:

1.RE 0/1 takes 8 other takes 9 blocks and i have 3 brothers that play one of these games.
----------------------------- (59 memory card) 1 full

2.Nfl2k3 takes 56 blocks for franchise then another 56 for roster and there is couple more things take up more space too.
3.Timesplitters2 maps takes 2 blocks for maps, and user names take another 2 blocks, and i have about 10 friends that play multi on this + me and a couple of maps (transferred some to 251 memory card).
-----------------------------(128 memory card)1 full

4.Animal crossing files takes about 58-61 blocks for each town, one town for me, and couple of my friends, and another town for my other brother and friends.
-----------------------------(other two 59 memory card)2 full

5.Zelda Wind Waker 12 blocks/ Zelda Bonus15 blocks
6.Smugglers Run 6 blocks
7.Metroid 2 blocks
8.Bloody Roar 3 blocks
9.Smash Bro. 11 blocks
10. Luigi Mansion 3 or 2 (number not on case)
11.Extreme G 4 or 3 blocks (number not on case)
12.Some Timesplitter2 profile 2 blocks
----------------------------(251 memory card)1 used

So it isn't as impossible, as you think it is.

Also I delete games I rent, but not what I have because I like to recall back to them sometimes, that is why I bought these games. Another thing SD cards plug into the memory card slot right, so its function should be to save your games, unless Nintendo expects you to beat games in one sitting.

costco has 251's on sale for about 16.  You can probably go with a 3rd party if you want more memory.

I don't know that store that's selling it for cheap, and 3rd party are more prone to losing your saved game files (my 128 memory card is proof 2 times).

i've got an interact 1024 card. i personally have had no problems with it at all, i have an animal crossing save,  7 resident evil1/0 saves. ssbm, a couple of Sonic adventure 2 saves. 3 bloodrayne's, 2 mystic heroes, wind waker and bonus disk, 2 two towers saves, and tons more that i dont remember at the moment.

it has never crashed or anything like that, although it does get a bit hot occasionally. that's why i take it out when i'm not saving. and it saves a LOT faster than other mem cards do. my sisters animal crossing card goes thru that save jingle 4-9 times. mine usually cuts it off at the 1st or 2nd time. and wind waker saves instantly, it doesn't even shows the now saving screen.

i'd recommend it, but don't let it get too hot, check on it after every few saves or so.

Yeah, I have that big @$$ Interact card too and have had no memory shortages at all. I did save Zelda on my old Nintendo 59 card though, just because I heard some people had problems using a 3rd part card with it.

While we are on the topic...

One of the things that I think blows about WW is that the camera will only store 3 pictures. Considering this is (at least) the second Nintendo published game in which you are allowed to do screen captures, you would think that Nintendo would have planned for a larger storage medium in the first place.

I'll be yet another person to post and say Interact's 16X memory card is a good solution. So far, it's my best memory card (I own 3 memory cards, 2 of Nintendo's and Interact's 16X card (1024 blocks of memory)). I have no problems for the most part except with Acclaim's All-Star Baseball 2003. ASB wants an absurd number of blocks for franchise and season play. The memory card has more than enough space for several careers and franchises, but the save size for some of the files is supposedly larger than than was intended for the card and there's a high risk of the save becoming corrupted (I saved my franchise with a separate backup on the very same card and never lost a game after that). Other than that, the 16X is a lot faster at saving (ex: Eternal Darkness will prove this versus a Nintendo card).

The third party card hasn't really failed me and I've owned it for a year now (bought it at this time last year when I purchased All-Star Baseball 2003). In fact, I wish I hadn't bought the other memory cards now. It's been a waste of money. I do use Nintendo's card for my most important saves, but otherwise Interact's card works fine. I've been extremely wasteful with saves and the lowest I ever got on space was like 400 blocks.

I use the interact 16x memory card and it's been working great.  I have problably close to 20 games now and they are ALL saved onto this memory card. (I use a nintendo 59 card for backup of really important games though).  I still have plenty of room for more too.  I highly recommend the interact 16x.  I've been using it close to a year now without a single problem.   Beats buying 4 nintendo 251 cards, that's for sure.

Nintendo was foolish not to do the Sd thing.

Without a hard drive, the SD is important.

We could use the SD to make custom soundtracks, like some Xbox games allow.

We could also save a lot more, and save files could be much larger allowing more data to be saved.

Dude, just get Interact's 16xx one. Thing has so much space you will be amazed. If space is really a issue I suggest you pick this one up. I have 26 games on it, and still have pluny of room left.

Haven't had any problems with it at all... and I can't imagine living off those small 59s, or 251s at all.

If you have that much money to spend on video games, is 20 dollars for another MC251 or one of those 4x third party memory cards really that much?

The SD-adaptor would have been a great addition.  But, perhaps Nintendo never got it working quite the way they wanted.  I doubt Nintendo just randomly said, "No, we aren't going to release this."  I do hope that we hear more about this at E3, though I am not  sure if I would ever buy one, on account of the price of the card and adaptor.

If they did show the SD card at E3 and releases over the summer, i would probably still get it, because i'm going to get more games and if i have a 32MB memory card then there is alot of chance that it will fit all in there, and I wouldn't have to keep switching/buying memory cards so it should pay off in time, and also it seems like data files are getting larger and larger.

I'm lucky not to have any save card intensive games I guess.  My A slot Card251 only has ~20 blocks used (1 per game), and my B slot Card251 is empty.

BTW, PS2 cards are 4 times larger at 8 megabytes, but they fill up fast too.  Games like Kingdom Hearts often use 100K each which is equivalent to 12 blocks!  In comparison, Zelda uses 1.  So, PS2 cards are 8 times larger but the saves are ~12 times larger too!  As programmers say, give them lots of space and they'll find a way to fill it up.

I'm finding this generation of memory cards saves about the same number of games as last generation.
