Is Super Paper Mario 480p + Video Lag issues
« on: July 22, 2007, 10:18:13 AM »
So I know some of you are quite the videophiles... I'm quite confused right now.  So I don't personally have an HD tv of any sort.  My dad however, has a 67 inch Samsung DLP set.  He's got his Wii hooked up over component and set to output in 480p.  All that seems normal.  Now, I played a lot Zelda: TP last november and never noticed any issues.  I also played a lot of games here since then, and never noticed any issues.

Well I was home for the weekend this weekend and I brought Super Paper Mario with me to try and actually finish the game.  I fired it up and noticed a very significant and very frustrating lag on the jumping.

So here's the wrinkle.  The TV has a "Game" mode that is used to get rid of delay.  The interesting part, is that it only is available for 480i signals (which makes sense, as 480p signals shouldn't lag).  So, if I tell the Wii to output in 480i instead of 480p, then let the TVs Game mode kick in, the lag goes away.

Why the hell would it be lagging?  Is Super Paper Mario not actually outputting in 480p so the TV is just confused?  Have all the games I've played on here lagged and Super Paper Mario just happens to be the first one I've noticed?

This is all especially relevant because this WAS going to be the next TV I buy.

Sounds like a TV issue, because that doesn't happen to me on any game I play including Super Paper Mario.

I bet the TV has to work harder to upscale 480p content than 480i (which has half the resolution at the same refresh rate).  Upscalers, I gather, are mostly intended for 24fps film content from DVDs, which only need to update their frames ever 1/24th of a second, allowing the upscaler enough time to keep up with the movie and our eyes.

Twilight Princess wouldn't really pose a problem either, since it updates every 1/30th of a second.

But Super Paper Mario needs to update every 1/60th, which could be 1/60th too fast for the upscaler to keep up with, causing the visual delay.

This is all something I noticed when I captured Wii Play @ 60fps to make this video.  Wii Play's aim was laggy and not comfy at all, while RE4 handled just fine.

I'm pretty sure game mode is always 480i on TVs that have it, or most of the time, and 480p most likely *does* cause lag on those sets. Maybe you didn't realize you were playing in 480i before?

Yeah, I think Pro666 is more correct than I am - it's probably because Paper Mario runs at 60FPS, and Zelda runs at 30FPS, as well as most other Wii games so far.

So what is the solution?  Don't buy a DLP tv?  That's pretty crummy.

I prefer a DLP projector with native 480p support (ie multi-rez support).

There was no lag on my 50" DLP when I was playing Super Paper Mario just a few hours ago, and I just tried it again and I went even tested it with my PS2 (GoW2) and then the GC (SSBM), they played exactly the same in Game mode too.

Hm, what exactly by lag do you mean, as in you press button 2 to jump and it isn't immediately observed, or, as in the whole game seems like it is running at a lower framerate?

I say if you see a TV at the store that you like - ask them to hook up a Wii or whatever to it, if they can't, then demand they let you bring yours in to test it, if they want to sell you a TV, they'll agree to it.

Man, I really like the looks of the Samsung 56" 1080p DLP.. I just saw an amazing deal for it ($1700 CDN). I don't know whether I'll get it or not, but if it has issues like this, I'm hesitant.

The game runs fine... it's just a lag of probably around a half of second between when you push a button and when the character actually does it on screen.  It's very disorienting.  Caliban, is your TV a Samsung?  Also, are you hooked up over component cables with the Wii outputting in 480p?  The game mode on his tv did fix everything, but it only seemed to work with a 480i signal.

Yes it is a Samsung (720p), and yes the Wii is connected with component cables, and so is my PS2 and GC.
My tv model is wierd though, according to the manual I have to Edit the name of the Input to Game if I want to put an Input in Game Mode, it would've been alot easier if I just could cycle through the modes using the Mode button but it only lets me choose between TV/DVD/VCR/Cable/STB.
I've been wondering if this problem varies between the different tv models, or if it's just a problem from your wii remote.

Well this is simply confusing.  My dad's is a 67 inch samsung 720p and game mode is done in the same way.  What the heck would be the difference that makes it work ok on yours?

Ok, I'm dumbstruck too but there can be just one simple detail we/you are overlooking that is causing this whole confusion.

I recorded this 46 seconds video with my webcam just to see if anyone thinks there is any lag. It's not in game mode.

By the way, your tv remote should have a button "Info" which will show on screen which resolution is being used, on mine it says " Resolution 720x480 @ 60Hz" when a game that is running at 480p, when the game doesn't support progressive scan i.e. 480i, just like Shinobi for PS2, it shows no info on the resolution at all.

Hrmm.. Ok, well it's going to be a bit before I'm at my parents again to do some more testing.  It's all very very strange.
