50 playable characters? BYO salt.
« on: August 22, 2007, 01:16:58 AM »
Insert token "grain of salt" comment. I haven't said this is gospel but it doesn't look like some kid photoshop'd some Melee graphics onto a TV screen to me.

Floating around Digg. Struck me as odd on three counts:

~ The arrangement of the character icons. Why not simply 5 by 10 and make the icons larger? Considering how many of the characters are locked in the screenshot, that bottom row doesn't look all that impressive.

~ The number of characters unlocked is minimal. So be prepared to slave over single player mode for a while (melee, ugh, talk about repetitive)

~ The menu isn't a huge change from the original. Maybe its not as important as the actual game but come on, throw some fancy stuff in there.

The controller icon is nice though.

This is really stupid...and not very well done.  Melee didn't have question markets on the screen for mystery character, and why wouldn't they group all the playable characters together to make it easy to pick a character...how it is seems spaced out to force people to discuss who is in the game...which is very much how I would create a fake screen and start rumors.

Oh well.  Thanks for the heads up on the rumor Shift Key, and it was fun to see the screen shot, but I enjoyed the Melee screen fakes where people went to the trouble to add several characters to the mix.

I don't think that all those are actually locked, if this is real.  It looks to me to be only showing characters that have been revealed.  I'm sure the blank spots will fill with more characters like melee.

Photoshopped.

In Melee, the promotional pictures for the characters weren't used in the character select screen. Most of these pictures are using promotional art from the website, something which I highly doubt they'll do.

Also, many of these characters won't be locked. It wouldn't make sense to release a character select screen with a "?" where, say, Jigglypuff will be.

It's on a teevee, so thats enough to fool a lot of people.

I dunno if I should believe it or not. I mean, it looks freakishly real, but... there are some pretty incredible 'shops out there, too. 50 characters?! Holy crap. I mean, it's fully possible for 50  Nintendo 1st party and 3rd party characters to show up in Brawl. This just gets me even more excited for the game.

Even though pretty much everything else about it is wrong (not grouped together, use of the stock art, mirrored images, melee color scheme (brawl's menus have all been white), no visable cursors, all characters appear to be chosen so why are they still on that screen... )

Here's a another one that is still pretty obviously fake, but there's far less wrong with it: http://zip.4chan.org/v/src/1187786300140.jpg

Remember that Brawl uses a much lighter color background in the menus this time around.  Like white, green, and nice a nice, pale pallet.  We saw this with the name entry thing.

Melee uses the promo art in the character select screen.  The promo art was included in Nintendo's E3 2001 press kit.  I have this press kit.

Could you post some pictures of this? I honestly don't remember any of the character pictures from the old SSBM site being used in the character select screen (I believe you, I just don't remember which ones they used).

Of course, it's my fonder wish that they return to the classic method of the orbiting character model being shown on screen, but I doubt they can because of model loading restrictions.

My other point about releasing a screen like this being pointless stands, though. There were no reports of Brawl being playable at tradeshows for someone to get an offscreen pic like this and there's no reason an internal pic would have "?"s over character faces.

S_B, if you go to the official SSB website and check the name entry it shows you a WIP version of the name and character select screen and they are using the CG render of Samus, meaning that they are using the renders from the site.

However, the picture is a fake as all the menus they have shown are white with some gray tones.

All of the initial character art can be seen here.  Obviously many of them were carried over the select screen, while others had new art made to properly fit the select screen.

Yes, but unlike this picture, they didn't use ALL of the promotional art pictures for the character select screen.

The first pic is obviously fake because the characters are randomly placed.

This looks shopped. I can tell from some of the pixels, and having seen quite a few shops in my time.

Sad thing is, the shopped menu is actually a little prettier than what I think the real one's going to look like. The character font's rather neat, and I'm not sure if I'll get used to the light menus in Brawl after the last two games.

No more character select screen.

Everyone will be fished from a pile using a crane-game interface.

has anyone ever played Wrestlemania 2000 or wwf no mercy for n64, those had good character select screens..because there were tons of wrestlers to choose from, plus player created characters.

As far as that pic goes.....wheres the refresh lines?

Then even if somebody got fox, their friends and shake their controllers and force the crane to drop Fox so nobody could use him.

On the topic, It's very possible for the game to have at least 50 characters when you include the bosses.  The question is more about how bosses play, though.

From: Old Smash Megathread(RIP)
You will no longer use coins to select your character.

Coins Bad...

You will now use the Claw and all the trophies will be huddled together.

...Your Master, the Claw, Good.

I Have Been Chosen!

Once the Trophy is in hand you make a throwing motion with the Wiimote to summon your contender into battle.

Mario! You are a Goooooo!!!!!

How Exciting.

Now on a serious note, now that I've thought about it.  Isn't it weird that the new menues are on track to be bright while the game is not?
