 Episode 53: From the Land of Nihon

Mike and Evan were both too hung over to appear in this episode.

Now that our 1 Year Anniversary Blow-Out is over and done with, it's time to return to business as usual. This week's episode isn't host to talking over one another, reminiscing about the past, or even Evan Bitchfield. Instead, Jonny and I brought Ty "S-U-P-E-R" Shughart on to throw some "American Gamer in Japan" hot sauce on our already delicious sandwich.

And how do we do that? It's the April NPD, baby! Nintendo's throwing aces, Microsoft's Elite didn't quite live up to its name, and Sony's fighting an uphill battle with the GBA (although maybe not the Micro, if you ask Jonny). Also, there's a new ESA President, Capcom spoke out on the Wii's storage space, and Lara Croft loves waggle!

Remember, with the links up above, you can subscribe to the podcast via iTunes (where you can also leave a review), as well as a recently added feature: digging Radio Free Nintendo. Be sure to click that link on your way out.

See ya next week, folks!

Yeah, FSU. I'll be moving up there shortly. Although I've still got tons of friends who are gonna be in Gainesville, so I'll probably drop in town occasionally, especially for that first Floridate State V. Florida game.

Hmm, perhaps we may meet up then.  I'm excited for next year's football season.  For all the obvious reasons, of course.

Maybe sometime I can crush you in perhaps Brawl by then, or something.  We'll have to see...
Or perhaps you'll beat me, but it will be the only time a Seminole beats a Gator this year.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;

Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

I believe the Wii only supports up to 2 gig SD cards but I have never confirmed this myself.

Also, Nintendo is silly for not supporting the stupid SD slot in any real way.  I totally agree with Jonny.

Hey Ty,

Can you hook me up with some play-asia links for some of those Kanji / Learning Japanese titles you were talking about?

Here's the software I use:

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-9g-49-en-15-rakubiki%2Bjiten-70-198v.html

You can search English words and Japanese words either by writing them or using an on-screen keyboard and it works beautifully. If you get it, make sure you don't actually get the old version (brown cover, doesn't say 'kanji sonomama' on it). The old one doesn't let you write kanji, just kana and romaji.

It also has a TON of example sentences in the entries, so it's not bad for learning/checking grammar.

I'm listening to this episode, and my ten minutes of rambling about Spider-Man games disturbs me a bit.  Is this kind of in-depth stuff really interesting to you guys?  If not, I'll tell Karl to start cutting me off earlier.

Hah, Jonny, your rants are the only thing keeping those "Whatcha Been Playing" segments over 5 minutes. Lord knows none of us can talk about Drake & Josh's password save system for more than thirty seconds.

Don't stop the rambling! We can always just fast forward if we don't want to get lulled into a compliant state of semi-hypnosis by your mellifluous voice!

Yea!  I got a sorta shout-out at the beginning.

Just to clarify my comment from last time, Karl has brought some much-needed order to the podcast.  No offense to Obi, but Karl seems to take his job as host much more seriously.  Personally, I sorta preferred the short 30 minute episodes with just two guys gushing about Super Paper Mario and whatever else was on their mind at the time of recording.  That said, Karl's in-your-face attitude and strong (sometimes for no good reason) opinions come off as a tad forced and (I'm really not trying to offend here; really) in all honesty, immature.  Maybe it's just because I'm reminded of my own manner when I was in high school.

Jonny, the Micro is awesome.  I paid $100 for the Famicom edition and don't regret it at all.  Also, there was a little known price drop at the end of last year and you can get them for a mere $70 these days.  Since I pretty much only play single player games on it, I don't really care about the lack of a link cable or any of that.

Finally, the exact quote of Yamauchi that Karl referenced was "If the DS succeeds, we will rise to Heaven, but if it fails we will sink to Hell".

EDIT:  I forgot to mention, April NPD numbers didn't include the launch of the Elite, which came out on the 28th (IIRC).  We won't know how the Elite affected sales until next month.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!
