The suggestions thread!
« on: April 30, 2007, 06:35:13 PM »
I'm surprised theres not a thread about this.

I'm giving in, I might end up buying Metroid Prime Hunters against my inner metroid fanboy self that screams to me to not buy spinoffs but... its metroid! then again, I haven't followed new releases closely, so I don't know of new games that I might like, I also find Hotel Dusk interesting, and I love those point and click adventures games, or even maybe Castlevania... argh, I don't know what to get

In summary, should I get Hunters, Hotel Dusk, one of the Castlevania games ( I don't know which one) or maybe some new game I haven't heard about? Any opinion is very welcomed.

Many thanks in advance

I preferred Dawn of Sorrow over Portrait of Ruin, though I don't know very much why.  If you enjoy touch screen controls, go with Portrait of Ruin, for one of the extra modes.

If you like online play, or play with friends, Prime Hunters is good, but if you don't, I don't think there's too much of a single player mode there, though I never finished it.

I'm curious to know if the Ultimate Jump Superstars, or whatever it is called, is worth picking up, as someone who has never once imported a game, and doesn't really plan to ever.  I feel halfway about it, but can't convince myself to.

I liked Dawn of Sorrow better also - I'd go with it over PoR, especially since you might be able to get it cheaper.. if you can over there.

Hotel Dusk is just amazing - point-and-click games + DS = love. I liked Trace Memory / Another Code too, but I'd definitely recommend it.

Metroid Prime Hunters is very good for multiplayer too, and I liked the controls, but  you don't play online, do you? And I don't suppose you know many people with a DS, so it comes down to the single player, which is decent at best.

So you should probably wait on Metroid - maybe get it later but not over the other two games. Between Dawn of Sorrow and Hotel Dusk.. hmm, that's a tough one. I would probably go with Hotel Dusk, since you've probably already played a Castlevania before, and while DoS is amazing, it's not very different from them.

Other new recommendations:

- Elite Beat Agents
- Lunar Knights
- Apparently Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime is good, but don't take my word for it

Portrait of Ruin's levels are much more linear than those of the previous Metrovanias. Often there's only one path to go with the only splits being the saverooms. If you have the choice, Dawn of Sorrow is better (though Aria of Sorrow beats it in some ways IMO so if you can get it the HoD+AoS double pack is the way to go).

I can't say much about Hotel Dusk or any other adventure game on the DS but Prime hunters is kinda weak. It has nice parts but overall is closer to Metroid Fusion than real Metroid.

Unless Ultimate is a big improvement upon JUMP I don't think it's that good of a game, it has loads of characters, some of whom you may recognize but the gameplay feels lackluster to me.

My advice: avoid Metroid Prime Hunters.

Dragon Quest Rocket Slime is excellent.  It knows exactly when to stop and is a fun ride throughout.  Though its worth the price you may be better served by renting it because it is a good game but short real world time.

EBA is really good.  Meteo is fun in a pick up and play way as well.  If you haven't played it yet Kirby Canvas Curse is pretty good as well.

I really liked PoR after you beat the game and can play as Richtor and Maria, then the game became twice as fun, and faster, or it seemed to me.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions!

I was very aware of Hunters single player weakness, but I'm such a Metroid wh*re that I would get it just for the cutscenes , I can finally play online though, I've tried bringing my Animal Crossing into the interwebs but around here the game is dead.

Castlevania has my interest since the last one I played was the NES one, and from what you are telling me I'd prefer Dawn of Sorrow, if the other is really more linear, would it be a proper comparison to say that PoR is like Metroid Fusion and Dawn like Zero Mission?

Possibly but not as extreme. Metrovania is by itself more linear than Metroid, PoR just had the map partitioned into areas that were mostly linear and thus had less exploration.

::peeks over shoulder for BnM::  Actually, we do have a thread for this sort of thing.  It's just that no one has used it in 2.5 years.

I also give the for Dawn of Sorrow.  However, Portrait of Ruin is still a great game.  If you're one of those players who likes to play through a game multiple times with different characters there's more to do in PoR.

I would only get Hunters if you've really got a hankering for some classic FPS deathmatching.  In which case you'd be better off playing Quake 3 or UT'99 with a mouse and keyboard.

Indeed.  And I second (third? fourth?) Hotel Dusk. Not only my favourite game on DS but one of the best of all time.

For imports I'd suggest Bleach DS and Chou Soujuu Mecha MG. Bleach is a fighting game of the kind that gets called Guilty Gear-like and Chou Soujuu Mecha MG is about hugeass mechs with the touch screen being used for the controls to make some actions faster and others more complicated (e.g. spin a wheel to charge your main cannon or drag cartridges into the drum of your revolver).

I finally got Dawn of Sorrow, I like it but I don't exactly love it, I hope to warm up to it as I play more, I've only played the very beginning.

I really, really wanted Hotel Dusk, and this impulse buy was because a relative was over there in the states, so I could get (finally!) a DS game at a decent price, but she couldn't find the game anywhere, it was sold out she told me about how "this crazy USA people line up to buy stuff when they are new, so the game was impossible to find"... well, at least the game is selling, I hope they make more in the future. Meanwhile I will have to pay it the expensive way, if the game ever arrives here that is.
