Cube games, Progressive scan on Wii
« on: September 22, 2006, 12:36:40 AM »
Does anyone know if the Wii component cables will be backwards compatible with Gamecube games on Wii? I've never wanted to bite on the expensive Cube component cables, but now I really have a desire to play as many games as possible in16:9 and 480p.

I'm really banking on it personally. I would imagine that if you have component cables plugged into the Wii, Nintendo wouldn't make you reach in the back and plug in composite cables just to play the Cube. I too am extremely reluctant to buy the Cube component cables. I assumed that the Wii would do 480p with the Cube if you bought the Wii component cables so I asked if the slot loading mechanism would allow Action Replay use so I can play my import games. That thread is HERE.

I have component output cables for the 'Cube and was hoping that it'll be forwards compatible with the Wii, but someone pointed out that it was unlikely.

As I said before, I hope component output cables are available on Day One or earlier, I don't want my Wii games to look less crisp than my GameCube games!  Especially if I have to show it to the Nintendo-haters that day.

I believe they are incompatible.

Component Cube cables will NOT be compatible with the Wii. The back of the Wii has one multi AV out, whereas the 1st batch of 'Cubes had one digital output and one analog AV out. You put the component cable in one, then use the  audio jacks from the the analog one. Not so with the Wii. It will be all in one.

The power cord looks strikingly similiar to the 'Cube, but its not like you can save money on it. You can't really ask for a Wii without a power supply.

Neodymium are you questioning if you have component cables for the Wii and you are playing Gamecube through the Wii that the output is 480p? In that case I would think yes. As far as the physical cables being able to be plugged into the Gamecube the answer is definitely no.

No, that's not what I mean at all.

While playing Gamecube games on Wii with a component cable, would I be able to see them in 480P and 16:9? *That* is what matters.

If they supported on the Gamecube.  The Wii isn't going to magically convert your game to480p and Widescreen when it was 480i.  There would be a delay that wouldn't be acceptable to do do that.  I'm sure that if the game supported 480p on the the Cube it will on the Wii.  Also.  Anybody remember whatever happened to the rumor that the Wii will wireless connect to the AV input?  (I mean now it makes less sense because the  IR bar has a cord but you know.  That connection does look like the digital out and not buying another cord is not buying another cord,)

The answer to this old thread is YES!!!  It will ask you if you want to change the resolution after you've booted up the GCN disc.

One of my favorite things to do with the Wii is play the old GCN games in progressive scan.  I never had progressive scan cables for my GCN...but with the Wii, I get to witness all the other games in progressive scan on my flat screen.

Metroid Prime 1 & 2 look and play especially great.  What is also great is that some games won't say they support progressive scan on the back of the box, but they really are.  One of the latest discoveries I made was playing Eternal Darkness in progressive scan and with the 16:9 widescreen option.

The bad thing about progressive scan with Eternal Darkness is you can tell that the videos are horribly compressed. Its not a bad thing for the game, just a few moments of 'eww, that looks bad'.
