System Decision time.
« on: March 25, 2007, 03:59:16 AM »
I'm in a conundrum.  My hand is being forced I now must choose.

Here are the choices.

1) Buy a PS3 now so I can get backward compatibilty.
or
2) Buy a PS2 so I can play the games I missed, mine died earlier last year.  Then get a 360 later on for next gen.

Each have there pros and cons.  PS3 cost.  PS2 "limitted" usefulness.  If the 360 played PS2 games I be set because there are games I want to play on the 360.  If KH3 comes out for the PS3 and not 360 then I'm stuck buying a non-backward compatible PS3 at full price as well.

So what do you guys think?

Well hasn't the PS3's BC been sorta butchered?  I thought I've read reports of certain "high-profile" games not working or looking like crap when played on it...Other than that, it's really up to whether you will buy PS3 games or not...

I would get a used ps2 and a bunch of games on creigs list and then get a 360.  My freind got a ps2, 2 controlers and like 10 games for $100.  God of War and GTA are worth a ps2.   I might wait on the 360 for a little bit first though cause i think they might put a bigger hard drive in it or somting and add HDMI for the same price soon.  If you alredy had a ps2 i wouldnt recomend getting one again though cause you can always just play old xbox games if you really want to last gen games.

That realy didnt make much sence but its just somthings to concider.

If you buy a 360 now, you risk the Zypher actually coming out.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

You're screwed either way.

Buying a PS3 now is expensive, but BC will only get worse (and right now it isn't perfect, despite it being hardware-based) and later on you'll have to upgrade your PS3 with rumble. Buying an X360 now is appealing actually, as long as you don't want to worry about "Elite" coming out prob this fall, or a price drop for the other configurations.

My advice? It sounds like you're choosing a Next-gen system between the PS3 and X360, and want to play PS2 games to boot. So buy a PS2 now. It'll give you better backwards compatibility than a PS3, so you won't have to spend $600 only to find out that certain games give you trouble with your new hardware. Then, consider buying an X360 either now or later since it'll be getting a lot of next-gen stuff, ports and the like. This way, you'll actually save money compared to buying a PS3.

ps2 hand down, nearly all of sony big titles are being ported to the 360 and last few games like MGS are leaning towards being ported to the 360. Also you wont be paying extra $$$ for a useless blu-ray player....

That's why I'm waiting a while before I get a Xbox 360, hopefully it will be out before Blue Dragon comes out, which would be why I buy one.

First off, that's garbage. Backwards compatibility improved with the 360 over time after launch as they got more games working under the emulation (and I believe software based emulation is more common these days. You can claim to support BC and show you're working towards 100% emulation by updating regularly without having to reach the mythical 100% support. Prove me wrong).

How will the PS3 do the complete opposite when they are planning on the same thing (intermittent software updates)?

Whut? Sounds like another rubbish bias. When he mentions an interest in games that are actually out on the 360 right now then maybe you build yourself a bandwagon and get everyone aboard. But for now its going to get more use as a DVD player.

My advice is this:

If you want to buy games for the Xbox 360 or PS3 right now, and you can't wait until the price drops, then go and pick it up.

If you'd rather just play the games that you have right now and wait for that price drop, then get a 2nd hand PS2.

Otherwise, don't play them. I've got a lot of PS2 games still even after I sold off my PS2. I'll probably get the Blu-ray player lawlps3lawl when its not priced at a king's ransom.

Right now the PS3 has hardware BC which runs like 99% of the old games well. Soon it gets "upgraded" to software BC which has severe issues with most popular games (including EA Sports' products).

It has been confirmed (image) that initial PS3 units include the CPU/rasterizer combination chip used in the slim PS2 (EE+GS) to achieve backward compatibility. European launch units will ship without the EE component, instead relying on software emulation for the Emotion Engine.

Yeah, they're different. Perhaps there's different ways of updating the PAL systems. Perhaps they've got voodoo magic into the PS3 to upgrade the BC. Perhaps I really don't really care at this moment in time.
