Nintendo head hopes game designers..
« on: March 09, 2007, 02:40:34 PM »
will focus on less violent games, because it is destroying the industry and giving it a bad reputation.  The news station followed up that report stating that there are tons of studies showing agressive behavior from aggressive video games.  This was a report on the Wii on Fox 5 NY..

I've never had the urge to play a violent game myself...they never appealed to me.  But I did play a round or two of Mortal Kombat and Lethal Enforcers.  that's as far as I went .

Don't come in here, swinging trashbags of stupidity like you own the place. Post some studies because the studies I've come across are usually dubious or inconclusive on the link between violent games and violent people.

Maybe I should have put in this disclaimer before someone jumped down my throat... 'I don't believe in those studies.... the kid is obviously mentally ill or something if he does something violent because of a game'...

Notice also, that IIIIIII didn't say that, it was on the TV station as part of the report.  Thanks for cutting off the first half of the sentence..

I've played so many violent games it's made violence boring to me.

The local news lapdogs trumpet AP's "report" like Pavlov's dog and surprise, surprise, they repeat the irrelevant, uncited propaganda about "violent videogames." Rinse, dry, repeat.

If I recall the only correlation they could even prove regarding the studies is that it violent games can increase the heartrate, but then agan, so what? BTW what I'd love to ask these people is why youth violent crimes have been plummeting since the late 90s, even with more violent, realistic, games being available.

Because they're all inside playing video games. That's why.

Link? I don't recall any recent remarks from Nintendo big wigs dealing with the topics of violence...

That said, I might be desensitized to violence. I'm 100% a Nintendo fanboy, but I also enjoy FPS games (in story mode or co-op only, I very rarely venture into PvP although that IS pretty neat too), would buy a GTA game on a Nintendo system in a heartbeat, am buying ManHunt 2, and loved Killer 7 and look forward eagerly to No More Heroes.

... then again, on the OTHER side, I am planning on buying 100% non-violent Wing Island, partly because of its non-violence. I personally believe that violence is acceptable when the subject matter calls for it, but oftentimes it's used as a crutch or sensationalistic aspect. I believe that there are many ways to generate excitement, fear, adrenaline, and many ways to get someone's heart pumping like mad WITHOUT resorting to making the player perform violent acts.

Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

I didn't need to quote the whole thing to know your opinion on this. What I want is facts. And Fox isn't facts, buddy.

Check the talkback for the Miyamoto keynote.  This is how the AP reported on his speech and it's getting picked up everywhere even though it is one of the most biased pieces of irresponsible journalism I've ever seen.

Oh, if only there where an ignore button on these forums.  Normally I ignore posts like this, but I'm in a rotten mood tonight .

To summarize post -
I mentioned a story I saw on the 10PM Fox News(in this case a SYNDICATED channel, WNYW NY).
I mentioned that at the end of the story, they said there where a bunch of studies that linked voilent video games to violent youth.
I stated that Violent video games don't appeal to me, but I have enjoyed Mortal Kombat and one or two others...

I also added that I don't think there's any truth to those 'studies'.  I played  Lethal Enforcer and it didn't make me want to play vigilante or hold up a bank with that plastic blue gun that came with
the Genesis version....

How much more clear can my 'opinion', as you say, can I get?

Thanks for the above link

I'll check out the article at a more reasonable time..and 1AM now ain't it .  I was checking my digital TV Tuner setup earlier and was scanning the HDTV channels, and saw the promo for the story...that's where I first heard it, and thought you guys would be interested .
Not surprising a news agency would misquote or alter something to get people to watch...they're worse than movie trailers that are better than the actual movie .

I really should have been more direct. Mainstream press is not there to report even-handedly. They're looking for viewers, and will favour articles that interest viewers, regardless of the details behind it.

The fact that you didn't provide any specific links or information behind it means this thread lacks substance. And the argument about linking violent games with actual violence is nothing new - its just used to draw in viewers.
