DS Wireless Security
« on: October 28, 2006, 12:29:42 AM »
Just watched Matt over at IGN demonstrate the Wii user interface.  I noticed that the Wii can connect to wireless network with WPA-PSK security.  Im just wondering when Nintendo are going to offer firmware updates for Nintendo DS to support this type of security.  It seems pretty useless to allow the Wii to connect to wireless networks with WPA-PSK security and your DS is still using WEP.

Come on Ninty get a move on and let us d.l some firmware upgrades.  Id like a secure wireless network not a flawed open wireless network with crappy WEP.

My guess is that the DS is simply too weak to handle proper WPA while running a game.

Perhaps your DS (using WEP) could connect through the Wii (which is connected using WPA...)

Bah... MAC filtering is good...

I thought of piggy backing the DS through the Wii but it still leaves a hole open in your wireless network.  If the DS can connect to your network through the Wii via WEP whats to stop other devices?  Yeah MAC filtering is good but not perfect MAC addresses can be spoofed.

I think the most you can do is to use an open system with a 128 bit WEP key, only allow registered MAC addresses a connection and dont broadcast your SSID.  Still a little future proofing would be nice via a firmware upgrade.

Nintendo should have taken advantage of this when they release the DS Lite.

If the DS connects through the Wii, in theory, any other item could pretend to be a DS and connect to the Wii, but perhaps, the Wii could be set up to only allow the DS connect to Nintendo's WiFi servers...

Yeah but Mac Filtering for the most part will keep out all but the more dedicated hackers.

DS can't handle firmware updates.  They've said that multiple times.

Yeah, they mentioned that Wii is the first system they've made that has upgradable firmware.

So will even light encryption.

Unless you short a contact on the bottom of the system, that is.

As said earlier, the DS can't handle WPA in software.  I remember looking into it when the DS launched, and the only hardware WPA chip I could find was prohibitively expensive, and may not have even been available when the DS was designed.

You can set up a DMZ for your DS.  I plan to do so when I eventually build a wireless network in my house.

I don't think Nintendo would support the SL1 contact on it's machine. Maybe you could send it in and they could do it for you one day. Actually, it would be great if the FlashMe makers could add WPA support to their custom firmware.
