IGN Video - Wii Interface
« on: October 31, 2006, 03:26:51 AM »
Here is a video of IGN's Matt Casamassina going through the Wii set-up menu and interface on their development unit. He also gives a quick demo of loading Wii and GameCube discs into the machine.

That 'ding' is very, very annoying. Otherwise looks great.

I want to know what happens if you insert a GameCube disc lower down or higer up. Or if you insert a disc backwards.

I agree. Hopefully there is a way to turn that chime off. It reminds me of that annoying chime that TiVO and DirecTV Plus DVRs have (which I have turned off on both of my DVRs)

I was wondering the same thing about GameCube disc placement. I'd imagine that if you insert a disc backwards it would be unreadable and the machine would just eject it.

Ooooh, I think that's pretty cool, actually. Simple and sleek. And I like how it moves seamlessly into the loaded game with a cool little splash screen with music in the background. I wonder if you'll be able to customise any of the default music/sounds since Nintendo is going to allow custome soundtracks.

Yeah, I wonder what would happen if you tried to load the gamecube disc and lower or higher, too.

And, if I do have to gripe about something...I think the note system is going to get old fast. Looks like it'll be annoying to send anything longer than "hello." And the notes from the games themselves seem more like spam than anything I'd actually care about. Yeah, it'd be cool to know exactly how long I've played each game and get other game announcements, but they should move all the game related messages to a different menu and put them on one big chart or something. I don't want individual notes everyday telling me how long I played a certain game and to "Come back tomorrow!"

And this really isn't a big deal, but I couldn't help noticing the little iPod clicks when navigating menu selections, as well as the overall Apple feel of the interface. It was nice when Nintendo decided to go the simple and sleek route like Apple, but now they're starting to move into blatant ripoff territory...

Eh, other than that I'm happy with the interface. It's simple, but it seems very intuitive. The wiimote even ran a lot more accurately when he adjusted the sensitivity settings to his liking. That might be the fix to a lot of the issues I personally had with the wiimote when I played it. We weren't allowed to change any of the default settings.

I can't wait to use the note system. I'd rather that then constantly texting with my cell phone all the time. Coming from the games, yeah maybe it can get old, but when dealing with real people I only see it as an advantage to the console.

I'm sorry but a lot of elements of this UI were a lot like the Gamecubes.  The sound effects for one.  Did anyone else notice that memory management uses the same cubes?  Or that in the blank channels smack dab in the middle is the Wii logo in every empty channel.  Also I wondering if there is a way to bypass the little load screen and go directly to the game when I click the game channel instead of going to a title screen, unless that is actually the games title screen.
As I mentioned in another thread it was about time to have universal screen and sound settings.  I also want to know how granular is the parental controls.

Ha! He said "It INJECTS the disc!"

Oooh, smooth.  I think the way it all works like a PC mouse interface is going to make a lot of sense to people that don't play video games now.

The "ding" effect seemed pretty harsh, but remember you're watching a compressed YouTube video.  The GameCube's "wee-ooo" sound effect would probably sound annoying in a video too.
That's my opinion, not yours.

-Video shows only 2 options for the sensor bar: above/below the tv.
-The keyboard function for the messaging/bulletin board looked very quick and easy to use.

No offense, I once used my Cube display as my room clock, I wouldn't mind having the option to turn the background or even all the sound off in the interface.

Looks like I'm going to be in the minority here, but I do not like the look of the UI (not like it matters that much though) it looks cheap and simple. Then again maybe I'm spoiled by the Xbox 360's UI!
