FAQ Attaq
« on: October 15, 2006, 07:17:12 PM »
This is the Talkback thread for our new Wii FAQ. The focus of the FAQ is to answer questions for the uninitiated and non-gamers. Wii should be understandable, and we want to help. If you have any questions to contribute, or feel any of the information in the FAQ is erroneous, please post here.

I'm not sure if you're aiming for Video Games 101 level, but if you are you might want to either explain what first/third parties are, or maybe avoid the terms altogether and just use something like "games made by Nintendo" or whatever.

Or am I thinking too simple?

Not a bad suggestion, I'll go re-read it and see what I think.

Why is it called the Wii?
What is the Philosophy behind the Name?

Metroid Prime 3 link.

Not to be picky but links to relevant press releases, example on the VC pricing.

On Channels it might be cool to link to the Nintendo Channel page where there are demonstrated and shown.

You might as well link Excite Truck and Wii Sport again on the bottom.

How does the Wii achieve it's mouse like control with the pointer? (Talk about the sensor bar.)

Will this be effected by Projection TV or a 16:9 Aspect Ratio?

What is the Approximate size of the WiiMote?
Is it officially called the WiiMote? (I thought they decided on the Wii Pointer.)

I heard there was a steering wheel adapter.  Whats up with that?

Does it support 480P and Component cables like the Gamecube?

What about Gamecube games?  I was into the PS2 but there are some Cube games I would have liked to play.  Will the Wii allow me to play these games on th VC?

How will the controller work with Gamecube games?

I heard that the Wii will take SD card for saving my games.  Is this true?

Short but nice faq.

Ceric's questions are a bit more advanced. If they can be explained easily, then cool. But careful with the tech terms.

You could add that Wii is pronounced as "we" in the first question. I was watching a tv show last week, and the host didn't know. He just said the letters "w-i-i."

Who can play the Wii?/Can girls play with Wii too?

What kinds of games are there?

How many people can play at once?

---

Some of Ceric's Q's, simplified:

What is a sensor bar?

What kinds of TVs can Wii be connected to?
(Any standard TV or any new widescreen HDTV)

How do you connect the Wii to a TV?
(It connects like a DVD player, and all standards TV inputs are supported.)

How do you save your game status?
(internal memory, plus SD memory cards -- the same cards found in most digital cameras.)

"wow."

Nice work guys. I can't think of any questions or thoughts off the top of my head, but if I think of anything I'll throw it at Svevan.

You should mention that the prices for VC games haven't been officially announced for the US yet.  Also, no mention of GCN gaming?

Yeah.
Thanks BigJim for the Simplifications.  That was one of the things about linking the press release or little story we have about as many things as possible.  That way it is known not to be speculation.

I have a serious one hope it isn't too complex:

Can the Wii controller be used for 1:1 motion?
Can the Wii sensor read 3D depth and movement? Is it like a 3D mouse? If not why did Nintendo say that it could?

They did?  I guess I was mistaken...  I knew they announced it in other territories, but I thought they were quite on the whole VC-issue here in the states...

Games are priced in Wii Points, which are universal.

Wii point conversion rate to real money is what's different from territory to territory. But in Japan the announced prices for anything from a 2000 point card to a 5000 point card holds up the 1 yen = 1 point conversion. The only announced American Wii Point card costs $19.99 for 2000 Wii points, a 1 U.S. cent to 1 Wii Point conversion.

Incidentally, the same 2000 Wii Point card costs $24 Canadian...

From a recent writeup on Wii Sports:

Just remember that large body motions are not a requirement – they’re what players do to have fun with the game.  Playing with smaller movements or sitting down is largely possible, doable and healthy.

The biggest shock we got on arrival was that not only is the Wii remote controller a truly remarkable tool, but the nunchuck controller also has a sensor inside, enabling it to be used in exactly the same way!  When introduced to Wii Boxing, all a player has to do is hold a nunchuck in one hand and the Wii remote in the other and then move exactly as you would a boxer – lean back or side to side, blocking, jabbing, upper cutting etc.  The Wii detects the movement of the nunchuck exactly the same way as it does your main remote. There’s no need to press buttons in this game, you simply move.
