Wii Messager Patent
« on: June 07, 2006, 08:14:10 AM »
Read it here

Published June 6th, 2006. The whole article is interesting and gives you a reminder that Nintendo is working hard. I suggest reading it.

Quote

The messaging service client allows the user to create a list (”buddy list”) of other users (”buddies”) with whom he/she wishes to remain in contact…The connecting user and his/her buddies can then communicate with each other on an individual basis and private chat sessions can be set up. These chat sessions are typically text-based, but it also possible to set up voice over Internet sessions between two users…

This (and the rest of the article) go hand and hand with the WiiPhone and camera ideas. Also, maybe there will be one universal friend code that differentiates your system from everybody else. Maybe something akin to a WiiPhone number?

Who knows if it'll become a reality. Still....it's very interesting.

EDIT:

According to the patent the system will have a View Associate List, Block List, User Preferences, Profile, Access, Status, Rules list, Alerts and Autostart Alerts. It also speaks about the possibility of a portable game console to use this (DS + Wii? sounds mindblowing).

Whoa. Seems like the DS might get a firmware update when in contact with the Wii.

i was thinking of the potential this could have in connecting with the DS earlier. if Wii had a buddy list set up and allowed for person to person messaging and/or full chatrooms, you could very well use a keyboard attached to Wii via its usb ports, or more interstingly use the DS to relay information.

say you and i wanted to chat, but i had to do things around the house and couldnt be teathered to a keyboard, i'd simply let my Wii and DS connect and now i could send and recieve messages from anywhere in my house as the DS uses the Wii as a hot spot to stay connected to wifi. yet on your end you could have some sort of option to either display my messages 'as is' or translate it into a normal text on your screen (considering you were using your tv and messaging on the wii + keyboard. the only bad thing i see about that is if i drew a picture on the ds and thru handwriting recognition, it was translated as jarbled text to you.

also, the DS could be used as a mic/speaker as well so if i did have to step out of the room and away from the wii, and assuming the wii speaker was also a mic and used as a "wii phone" voice communication would still be possible.

Very true and interesting indeed.

I think the most proficient way to handle this is to setup a furom like display, where regardless if it's text or scribbles you draw, it'll show it.

For example:
IMAGE COMPLETELY OVERSIZED READ IMAGE GUIDELINES IN THE ANNOUNCEMENTS SECTION

I can still participate regardless of the medium I use.

I had always said that I was glad that Nintendo used the DS's online as a sort of "beta test" for how their Rev online services would work so they could work out the bugs early on.

It seems that they're going for a full-out Xbox live like service this time around.

Anybody using this patent to say the Wii WILL support these features is wrong. The patent was filed six years ago, before Iwata was in charage and before the Wii was even a twinkle in anybody's eye. This patent is just that, it's a patent filed IN CASE they want to use the feature. It is in no way proof that they will use it.

With that said, I think they will, but I'm not going to use this patent as proof.

Yeah, E3 isn't proof Wii won't fail.  Look at how the DS is crumbling in Japan.

Oh I never said this was proof. Your exactly right. This isn't proof.

However, I believe Iwata to be a genius. He knows the potential the Wii has, especailly when used in conjunction with the DS.

Honestly, if this doesn't turn out to be true, I bet you anything that something just as great will take it's place.

This will probably be used in conjunction with the friends codes Nintendo plans to have with the Wii, if its implemented that is, like you can only IM people on your friend's list.
