I thought this was shown at E3, but I guess now it's confirmed again or something.

Now, who would buy the NES version of this game?  Would they bother to have two versions of the same game that appear on the NES/Super NES/Genesis/Turbo Grafx-16?

If the button layouts are the same (and I recall they are), and if the stages are the same, then gameplay-wise they should be too similar, in which case I would vote for the TG-16 version in this case on graphics alone.

Bonk's Adventure: TG-16 > NES. (graphics)
Donkey Kong: Arcade > NES. (one more stage)
Super Street Fighter II: Super NES > Genesis. (controls)  Actually, that probably goes for most games.  Mortal Kombat is debateable, though... (blood or lack of it)

Though, back on topic...how many Bonk games are there?  I remember being surprised when the NES Bonk came out because Bonk almost appeared as a mascot for the TG-16 (platforming heroes usually are; note the common association of Crash Bandicoot with the PlayStation)...

Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

I think it would be the TG16 version

I also think it should be the TG-16 version in this case.  A NES version also exists, and I was just questioning if multiple versions of the any game should be available.

"Now, who would buy the NES version of this game?"

A completist I suppose.  I imagine the situation for having multiple versions of the same game will depend on the licencing system for the VC.  I figure Hudson would get some cut for any TG-16 games since it's their console.  Now Nintendo might not allow for third party games on non-Nintendo consoles.  Either way though Hudson probably gets a bigger share of the profits for their TG-16 games than their NES or SNES ones.  So if they feel the NES or SNES version will eat into sales of the TG-16 version they might choose to only make the TG-16 version available.  They'll do whatever they think will make them the most money obviously.

Completists, eh?

I was wondering based on the structureof this all if collecting is an option.  I'd like to collect games, even if they're just the downloads, but I suppose the question is if they got downloaded to my hard drive and take up my space or if they're all remotely stored and I'm really just collecting the means to access them.  Then there's the whole thing about not only purchase options but also subscribe options.  I suppose those are questions for another time.

Was Bonk an official TG-16 mascot?  Or is this something I could look up on Wikipedia?  I recall a game called Keith Courage In Alpha Zones on the TG-16, and I figured that packaged-in games were more likely to create mascots.  I'm guessing it probably did get packaged with Bonk later.  I dunno.  I'll shut up now.

Yeah, I doubt Nintendo would release inferior versions (I'm guessing; kinda not familiar with the Bonk oeuvre) of the same game at the same time as it would waterdown sales of the origina, and I doubt Hudson would want a one-time mascot's flagship title to be appearing on other "platforms" than its own if they could avoid it.

I don't think it was the 'official' mascot. Well, it was no more or less official than Mario being the NES mascot. Just the assumed promotional mug.
