Nintendo aiming for October launch
« on: May 24, 2006, 10:46:42 PM »
sez Kotaku

This has been speculated for awhile, and now it's semi-official. Great news. If Nintendo plays their cards right (ie: doesn't have outrageous shortages), this could result in hardcore fans getting casuals hooked on the system before the holiday buying season.
“...there are those who would...say, '...If I could just not have to work everyday...that would be the most wonderful life in the world.' They don't know life. Because what makes life mean something is purpose.  The battle. The struggle.  Even if you don't win it.” - Richard M. Nixon

Still no word on when us poor Europeeens will have Wii on our hands. I might have to do the dirty and import Wii from abroad if it looks like a long wait. Thinking about it you could probably smuggle anything through customs in a box marked 'Wii' - what customs officer is gonna want to risk opening that :-)

If this is true the North American Launch might be the first again. I don't know if they want to risk launching in two territories at once since they are concerned about supply issues.
Stupidity is lost on my. Then again I'm almost always lost.

I think Nintendo should continue the trend of doing something different, by launching in PAL territories first. It would be good for them overall. Americans will buy it anyway, Europe really needs a big smashing impact so Nintendo can finally break into that region with a home console.

I think it would be very smart to launch again in the US first.

The Wii market in Japan is absolutely guaranteed.  The Japanese are just going to eat the system up, and at such a low price point everyone can afford it.

The US is going to be a harder market to launch in...but if it can be out before the PS3 with Zelda, Metroid, Red Steel, Madden, and Tony Hawk DownHill Jam then I believe it will have great chance of gathering huge suppport.

Then November Nintendo can release another Wii game (Wario Ware or ExciteTruck) then March would be the release of Mario Galaxy (6 months after launch.)

I say, if they have enough machines, they should do a same day launch in NA and Japan, followed by Europe and Austrailia within a month, and then all other markets a month after that.

Actually if they can get enough machines built do it all on the same day in every market, get in before all the major holidays

The Moon is still playing Atari.  They don't need the Wii yet.

Hey! I live on the Moon and we need the Wii like everyone else. The Atari is only popular around here cause its where all those damn ET carts were dumped.

Because Canadians do as we do.  Step out of line, and blam!  The 51st state is born!  Lets be honest-the total population of Canada roughly equals California's...

Depending on what circles you travel in, it can also be Britain, or Israel.

I've heard Iraq will be stepping ahead of Puerto Rico in line.  Though Guam really wants to stake its claim as well.

Because a lot of people really thought that California was bigger.

And California's land mass roughly equals Japan's, despite having a population size that is about 1/4 of the Eastern nation... more random facts.

Canadians have thanksgiving to give thanks for the harvest, and it's earlier up there because it turns winter sooner.

But do Canadians have a Black Friday equivalent? Otherwise, what's the point of launching the Wii before Thanksgiving in the USA's northern suburb? (har har)

"But do Canadians have a Black Friday equivalent?"

Boxing Day.  That's the day after Christmas, though.  Not exactly ideal for a console launch.

Does something actually sell better just by virtue of being released on Black Friday?  Do Americans only want products released on that exact day?

I think Wii would sell either way.  In fact, history tells us that Xbox outsold GameCube slightly in their first holiday season, so it would seem that it's better to launch earlier.  Of course, that's a pretty narrow perspective, but the point is that, based on the Xbox and PS2, it doesn't hurt to launch a console before Black Friday.

We do have a peak shopping period in Canada, I think it's some weekend between "Black Friday" and Christmas.  I don't really remember, but I do remember hearing that a predictable top-sales weekend exists.
That's my opinion, not yours.
