What are the chances?
« on: April 28, 2006, 02:02:51 PM »
This is totally hypothetical as it's just a random thought that passed slowly enough through my head that I could remember before the ensuing onslaught of completely unrelated ideas trampled through destroying all memory of it.

What if the Wii were to become so popular that it completely crushed the ps3 and xbox360 and made them no more? both sony and microsoft admit their defeat and go back to making billions of dollars the in other areas of entertainment. then Nintendo stands alone again until someone else decides to take a shot. This is what we all want right?

Ok so here's my question. If this were to happen what are the chances of the good games for those systems (halo3, new xenosaga, and a bunch others) being brought over to Wii to generate sales since they didn't sell on the other 2? I'd love to play some of the games being created for the ps3 but i don't want to buy one. I probably will eventually break down and get it, but I'd rather my hypothetical situation manifested itself.
Silly monkeys; give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down. How they survive so misguided is a mystery. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an a eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

I don't want to see a single party with 100% market share.  Look at how quickly the handheld market became enjoyable because of the Sony competition.

I want to see Microsoft out of the scene.  I feel like they are intentionally trying to crash the video games market to draw gamers into PC gaming (dun dun dun on vista!).

I forsee a duopoly between Sony and Nintendo going into next-new-gen.

Competition keeps companies on their toes.  If Nintendo had no competition they would start to slack off.  I felt with the GBA they slacked off a lot.  In 2002 Metroid Fusion was the only non-port first party GBA game released.  One game in a whole year.  They knew because of no competition they could just re-release the old Mario games and get away with it.  Look at Pokemon.  They know they don't have to try with Pokemon so they don't and the games suffer as a result.

Hell I've noticed that this gen the most interesting games were released within the first few years when the competition was still fierce.  Once it became obvious that the results were going to be PS2, Xbox, Gamecube everyone very obviously put it in cruise control.  2005 wouldn't have been such a lousy year for the Cube if Nintendo was in a tight battle.  They would never let things get that bad because they would know they couldn't get away with it.  With the Cube they know they're in last and nothing's going to change that so they've stopped caring and it's REALLY obvious.

What you really want is two competitors in a close race where they switch positions a few times.  It's not a coincedence that the 16 bit era had such tight competition and is remembered so fondly.  Sega and Nintendo were at war so they went balls out trying to top the other guy and the result was some of the most brilliant games ever made.

I really don't mind things the way they are, but I would really like Nintendo to grab a larger share of the market and be back on top again. I think they were dealt alot of hard lessons and have come a long way since the old days and deserve some recognition. I think the title being Wii may hinder the chances Nintendo has at being number 1 but what do I know. What I do know is that I'm going to buy one without question.

Xenosaga = Pretty good chance
Halo = Slim to none

Halo'd probably just become a PC game if Microsoft stops making consoles.

I agree with Ian in that I want a neck and neck race between two companies. Wii and Xbox360 or Wii and PS3, it doesn't matter.....

I still refuse to consider Sony or Microsoft video game companies. I want Sega to make a comeback, or someone like Namco to make a console.... Anyone besides these big non-gaming focused electronics companies.

Unfortunately, in a couple generations or so Microsoft will have basically bought out everybody, thus ending videogames as we know it... /cry

--Isn't Sony sitting on a 100 million PS2 userbase? What's the Cube at, 20 million? They'd have to somehow lose 40 million customers to Nintendo just for it to even out. Even the N64 has outsold the Cube by 14 million.
