UBISOFT UNVEILS EXCLUSIVE NINTENDO REVOLUTION TITLE: RED STEEL

First-Person Action Title to Debut at E3 2006

SAN FRANCISCO - APRIL 11, 2006 - Today Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, announced the development of Red Steel, an exclusive first-person action title for the Nintendo Revolution (working name of the new Nintendo platform). Red Steel is set in modern-day Japan. Players will master both the ancient art of the katana and the sophisticated technology of modern firearms taking advantage of the emotion and immersive gameplay possible only with the Revolution's remarkable controller.

"We're honored to announce this exciting new franchise and we're confident that  Red Steel will be the must-have title for the Revolution when it launches," said Serge Hascoet, chief creative officer at Ubisoft. "We have been working closely with Nintendo to take full advantage of the innovative controller to create a thrilling experience that can only exist on the Revolution."

Red Steel will make its worldwide debut in May 2006 at E3 in Los Angeles. With the style and flair of a contemporary action movie, Red Steel will appeal to gamers who thirst for a new video game experience, as well as those who may have not previously considered picking up a controller.

"Nintendo is excited to have Ubisoft bring Red Steel to the Revolution launch lineup," said Reggie Fils-Aime, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Nintendo of America. "Ubisoft makes some of the most innovative and critically acclaimed games in the industry and from what we have seen from Red Steel it is going to be a standout exclusive title on the Revolution."

Ubisoft has a strong history of creating some of the industry's top-selling video game franchises. To date, the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and Rayman franchises have each sold more than 15 million units worldwide and the Prince of Persia franchise alone has sold more than eight million units worldwide. The Red Steel brand will reflect this expertise and build upon Ubisoft's past to invigorate the future experience allowed within the Revolution platform.

Ubisoft will disclose more specific information on Red Steel in the coming months and Nintendo will reveal more information about the Revolution and its unique controller at E3.

For more information on Ubisoft's Red Steel, check out the worldwide exclusive article in the May issue of Game Informer Magazine.

I heard about this game ... something about swords, right?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

It's nice to see "exclusive" in a press release for a third party game on a Nintendo console.  I haven't seen that too often in the last few years.

Visions of grandeur. No matter how good this game is THE must-have title for the Revolution launch will be a Nintendo game, this will most likely be the must-have 3rd party title. All in all though it is exciting.
Silly monkeys; give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down. How they survive so misguided is a mystery. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an a eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

I don't know.  I'd argue that Rogue Leader was the must-have title for the Cube launch.  Though that's largely a technicality because SSBM and Pikmin came out a few weeks after launch.

I wish rogue squadron was coming out for Revolution. Imagine, going through hoth (AGAIN), BUT, this time you can shoot your harpoon torpedo with super accuracy!

But really, it is nice to see the titles trickling out, and actually having a pretty varied launch lineup for once. N64, GC, GBA, and NDS had terrible launch lineups. Or had a good title, but lack of titles afterward. I don't think we'll be seeing twenty launch titles, but even half that is a really good amount of games for launch.

Everything that's been happening these past few months all point to Nintendo taking back the industry!! $500 for a PS3 is a bit steep and I'm sure not everyone is willing to pay that.... But it will sell out at launch and have huge shortages for much longer then the X360 did imo....

No doubt Red Steel will make the Sony and MS fanboys at least give the rev a try... and that's all we need. "Hmmm... well the Rev is only $200... and all the magazines and my friends are telling me how cool it is.... I better buy one to fit in."

I'm glad Nintendo chose the road of helping 3rd parties to sell their games on their console, rather than slinging money hats at them.

This is evidenced by Reggie's statement in the article. It makes sense that they do this: Nintendo fans will be more likely to buy the game and Ubi will be more likely to duplicate their support in the future as a result, knowing that Nintendo is willing to lend resources to help them.

I've always believed that Iwata was a diplomat and that a diplomat is just what Nintendo needs right now.
"OK, first we need someone to complain about something trivial. Golden or S_B should do. Then we get someone to defend the game, like Bill or Mashiro. Finally add some Unclebob or Pro666 randomness and the thread should go to hell right away." -Pap64

Well I'll be... a rumor actually pans out to be 100 percent true. Ubisoft making an exclusive? Who'd would've thought?

So can we stop hating on Ubisoft now? Or are the Ubisoft haters still holding out? You know who you are...

Can this be the start of beautiful 3rd party relationships? Has Nintendo traded money hats with olive branches?

Yeah, why is there UbiSoft hatred? Any company that puts out both Sands of Time and Beyond Good and Evil and NOW Red Steel is A-OK in my eyes. Plus, EA is trying to take them over in a hostile fashion. Don't they get any sympathy points for fighting a company that is truly deserving of hatred?

We've only just begun on Revolution game news. We knew the system was an obvious choice for FPS and we're all this excited about something we expected. Sure, we didn't expect an exclusive 3rd party FPS that was mature and cool, but as an idea, this isn't unexpected. Imagine the reaction we'll have to the truly new stuff, assuming the new stuff will be there. There will be internet riots. They've never happened before, but they will when we learn about this stuff. I can't wait.

"Yeah, why is there UbiSoft hatred?"

Well they're kind of bland.  They milk sequels like EA does.  Splinter Cell is cool but Ubisoft releases one like every year.  They also designed their second Prince of Persia game specifically to attract the people that didn't buy Sands of Time with all sorts of generic "extreme" content.

I see Ubisoft as a company that has many talented development teams but unfortunately as a publisher has a little too much in common with EA.

They're talented enough that it's fair to be optimistic about Red Steel though.

There's also their lazy, cruddy porting of games to Gamecube, and of course that whole StarForce debacle on the PC side.  There's no need to get into that debate here, though.  I'm still on the fence, personally, when it comes to Ubisoft, but good Revolution support would certainly do a lot to help their reputation in my eyes.

I'm glad Nintendo is helping a third party developer unlike last gen when they didn't help with the online gameplay. I guess my problem with Ubisoft is that they make horrible ports for PS2 and GCN (the two systems I own) so I don't buy their games that much. Hopefully this is the beggining of something great.
