Is it right to compare NDS and PSP?
« on: January 25, 2006, 06:53:39 PM »
I know people are really focused on the NDS vs PSP in sales, but really is it fair to compare the two? The NDS is basically a gaming system, with few other "extras", while the PSP is more of a handheld multimedia system that also plays games, it is more for the technology geeks than it is for gamers (not to say it doesn't have some good games!). It is my opinion that the PSP should be in another category by itself, just look at all the VMD movies on the shelves as compared to games.

Sony, Nintendo, and bascialy everybody else in the world compares them so Id say its fair. PSP is a game machine with extras to attract non gamers. Same deal as PS2.

The N-Gage was briefly compared to GBA before it died a few minutes after launching, and it could also be used as a mobile phone and MP3 player, so yeah, it's fair. Sony did proclaim the PSP would take handheld gaming out of the ghetto or whatever, after all!

It's fair. Just because the PSP has "non-gaming" features, isn't enough to consider it anything other then a handheld gaming system.
Currently Playing: Twilight Princess(Wii), Castlevania: PoR(DS), Mario vs. Donkey Kong2(DS), Wii sports(Wii)
Anticipating: Mario Galaxy(Wii), Blue Dragon(360), Dragon Quest:Swords(Wii), Dragon Quest IX (DS)

Is Sony competing for Nintendo's portable marketshare?  Yes.  Therefore it's fair to compare them.  They were even released around the same time.

You can compare anything.

These are two handheld electronic devices, so it's certainly not an unfair comparison.

My thoughts?

PSP hardware > DS hardware, only specs-wise, BUT DS software >>>>>> PSP software, and software is the important part.  And the hardware specs don't matter much when the PSP doesn't have a touch screen and microphone.

All I ever hear about the PSP is how to put Super NES ROMs on them.  Or other techy hacks and mods.  Few people talk about, you know, actually playing games on them.  Even the UMD thing takes a back seat.  It's a geeky tech toy for sure but not a very good one for gaming with its own software library.

Id said that when both were release it was fair, but now it isnt, when the software tha sells in the psp is not games but UMD movies theres simply not point in comparison, the psp failed as  a gaming platform, period. For people who like to compare raw unit sales without taking into account software sales should for that matter include ipod, portable mp3 and dvd players number in that mix.

Absolutely. And the Rev can be compared to the others too..

And I always thought that the software tie-in ratio was A LOT less on the PSP than the DS, because of all the other features that took the focus away from gaming. In Japan, this is true; there DS games are selling like hotcakes and the ratio is much more than the PSP. However, over here, when the yearly numbers came in, the PSP software numbers were more than respectable. They were less than the DS if the bundles were counted, but they were still quite good. That was a big surprise, but I guess we'll have to see what happens next year to get more of an indication..

I remember back when I had a Game Boy and my friend had a Game Gear. When it was cool to be a stupid Sega/Nintendo fanboy. And even though I basically hated the Game Boy, I'd defend it to the death. My friend used the "BUT GAME GEAR CAN LET YOU WATCH TV AND LISTEN TO FM RADIO" sales pitch as why the Game Gear was a better gaming machine.

I just thought you'd like to know this exciting slice of my life. :]

No, they can't be compared.

If you compare them, then the amount of crying from Sony fanbois will flood the earth with tears and we'll all have to drink our own filtered urine like Kevin Costner did in "Water World".
