Midway-Studios Austin has exciting opportunities for Level Layout Designers to apply their specialized skills on a high profile, next-generation first-person shooter using the Unreal 3 engine. You will be instrumental in visualizing game levels, and working under the direction of the Lead Level Designer. You will work within a level strike team, with a scripter, an audio implementer, and environment artists, to turn your dream into a reality.

Requirements:
The candidate must be proficient in level building tools and other tools/techniques essential to game design. The candidate must be able to document their design and ideally can contribute good ideas on one or more areas of a game's design. Likewise, the candidate must be able to successfully identify problems in a level?s design, support other game designers with technical and creative issues, complete tasks to quality on time, and easily take creative and technical direction.

We are looking for creative and motivated professionals with the following essential skills and at least 2 years of game development experience.

Requirements: Key Skills:

Must have worked on at least one previously published title.

Must have previous experience building 3D environments in an editor.

Must have strong level design and level layout skills.

Previous experience with Unreal technology is an advantage, but not required.

Previous experience with a scripting language is an advantage, but not required.
Personal and Interpersonal Skills:

Must work well in a team environment / share responsibilities.

Must be self motivated.

Must have a passion for creating and playing video games.

Must have good communication skills.

Awww.  Mark Rein must be so proud.

Nice to know the Rev can handle the U3 engine.  1/4th the size of the 360 and it can do it.

I must find a way to use "burninate" more in my daily speech.

This is a good sign, not because they're working on the Rev, but because this is exactly the kind of game which Midway and many other developers would always NOT develop for the GC.

Agreed, but since the Revolution is a new system - it kind of wipes the slate clean, at least during the first year on the market.

well  you have to  remember, ps2 cost  100  dollars more then  gamecube  and was  nowhere near as powerful as gamecube. Then  again it wasnt as powerful,  and yet it  handled re4 which  was the b est  looking game of  the  generation  pretty well,  not perfectly...but pretty well.

That's what I'm hoping, and devs can yammer about the controller all they damn well please but none of it means anything until we actually see games being announced for the Rev like this.

Good find BlackNMild2k1.  There seems to be a fairly steady stream of news about devs working on or wanting to work on the Rev.  I hope this keeps up.  If there are a fair amount of 3rd party support, including some big name devs, and the Rev has a decent launch then there will more then likely be more jump on board.  Especially if the Rev proves to both excell in ports AND in unique games.  So far so good.

Hooray for another derivative FPS!  
Good signs for the marketablility and 3rd party support of the REV, but I really hope that cross-platform/ported junk is not the only thing western devs can supply for another generation in a row.

The only problem is if you don't really like the FPS sub-genre. (I don't hate it.) The problem comes in that the Revolution is probally going to becoming a breeding ground for the carbon-copy FPS, using the Unreal Engine or another generic engine on the market.

As for using the Unreal engine once you buy the lisense to use a game's engine (usually graphics, physics and i/o) you can tweak it to fit the system and the type of game you are programming (for). The engine just helps devlopers by cutting nessary programming.

The counter point to this is that it doesn't nessarily mean that the Revolution is as power as the other systems, since you can theoredically use the engine and tweak it down as well as up.

Midway up till now has stated they woudl NOT develop for Rev, so thsiis extremely GOOD news. This means Area 51, MK, Narc, and Midways Arcade Treasures remix, and most imortanlty Mortal Kombat, have better chances of coming to the Rev. Good news indeed.

I like Mortal Kombat for some reason.  I usually don't like gore or violence for the sake of it itself...like I don't get joy by running over prostitutes in the GTA games...but I love the Fatalities in Mortal Kombat, even if over half of them are uninspired.  Probably links back to memories of playing MK II and just trying to do every Fatality/Friendship etc. with every character just to say that I've done it all.

So I hope they bring the MK franchise to the Revolution too.  With all-new and neat Fatalities involving the controller's motion sensor!  o_0

This is good news but its far from being a confirmation, I prefer to take a "wait and see" position.

Actually if they are hireing staff for programming it is one step after the wait and see. They are going to try an make a build see how long it takes to make a game, how much it costs, and maybe release it to see if it is recieved well. Its more of a testing the waters. They can back down after any point in the development but they are trying to make a game. I like the Shadow Hearts series that they publish. But that is made by a Midway external developer.

You listed Mortal Kombat twice.

Midway doesn't make Mario Kart.

Where's Ian to tell us that Midway doesn't matter?  I think it's good news.  I'm strangely a fan of Mortal Kombat, too, and I personally hated the series when I was younger.  I feel that it's matured a bit now that the initial "OMG!  It's violent!"  hype has worn off.  Maybe it's not the best fighting series around, but it's decent fun and it has a fairly interesting plot.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Here I guess.  Midway doesn't matter.  There, happy?

Actually Midway was pretty sour on the Cube towards the end so having them "back" is significant in a way.  Nintendo didn't have to earn EA's or Ubisoft's support because they were already there.  But they did have to win Midway back so that's encouraging.

Still Midway hasn't released anything really worthwhile since they stopped making arcade games.  But having them on board is still better than not.  I don't they'll make any huge hits but they'll make some okay games that some people will like and it will allow more games on the shelf which is good for marketing.

Midway actually was pretty important on the N64 because they supplied a lot of exclusive content.  If they were like that again then this could be a reasonably big deal.  They lost a lot of stream becoming multiplatform.  On the N64 they were a big fish in a small pond and maybe they've realized that that was more beneficial to them then being generic third party developer #908 on the Playstation 2.

You know the Unreal Engine 3 part could be just for the PS3 and X360, it might just be a really general job listing.

I shouldve clarify that I was talking about the Revs graphical capabilities, as Paladin says, theres no confirmation that the Rev will run Unreal 3, which really woldnt surprise me but also it wouldnt dissapoint me if it wasnt possible. The little fact that they listed Revolution is good and almost a confirmation to support of the console of course.

ok well in regards to mentioning Mk mutiple times, duh its my favorite video game series! yeah No MK for Rev means I will have to buy it soley for the VC and a hadnf ull of exclusives. I will then get the 360 for the midway games and Sega stuff that wont make it to rev.





Also Midway has some big games like Blitz and Crusin USA, and Area 51 ammong others that wont kill rev if not there but will help if present. As for Midway not suporting rev, they have stated publcily ont hier website that they wouldnt maek games for Nintendo anymore, they said that GBA and DS and all other systems wouldnt get any support because of GBA and GC sales (in regards to Midways software not hardware sales.)


I cant seem to find the article rigth now but I read it somewhere recently. Or maybe it was in an email I got from them which if thast the case I really dont trust that too much anyways. Also the new Rampage game is coming to GC still right?

Every game helps, even if it's just for the sake of a final tally of all games available on the system. Even BMX XXX was one more game that counted towards the GC's grand total, trash or not.

It's saying, "Ah, we don't need ______." which is the wrong mindset. Nintendo needs everything they can get their hands on. Even if it doesn't sell consoles, even if the game sucks, it's one more game which is on their console which cannot be used as a reason to not buy a Rev. It starts with small omissions and goes further, until half of all games which are multi-console don't include the cube.

Midway being back on board is indeed good news because it cements the fact that they haven't given up on Nintendo, just the GC (which Nintendo itself has basically given up on).

If 3rd parties are also curious as to how Nintendo will do, so much so that they're afraid to rule it out too early, then this is a good sign. It means that they haven't ruled Nintendo's next console out, which is a relief because they've clearly ruled out the cube.

ok I am agreeing with you for the most part I ama big fan of Midway games and am excited they are giving teh Rev some attention.



now fo the MK ting, I was going to type it in there a few mroe times Iw as bsaicaly saying MORTAL KOMBAT is the only reason to care if Midway is on board or not. IF THERES NO MK I am goign to use REV mostly for VC and geta 360 for MK games. Mortal Kombat has been a totaly awesome series this last gen, Deadly Aliences was the best MK game I ever played, Deception was good but not as good as DA, Shaolin Monks is a nice refreshing take on MK 2 and also is a fun game to play. teh new MK game which is also going to get shafted as far as GC is conscerned looks to be the best game this gen as far as MK is concerned.


I had to get and Xbox for MK Shaolin monks, among others, and I do NOT want to miss out on MK games next gen so if Midway stays with Nintendo and maintains some success the it will be easier for me to stick with the rev.


NOT getting MK Deception rigth away, then seeing it didnt get the online features, then not getting Shoalin Monks or Narc all had a big impact on me. Also the new Gauntlet game and Rampage are high on my list. Iguess Midway has always been a big developer for me, i usualy have several games made by them each gen and I expect to get more games. Like Sega they are a big decideing factor for me.

So its EXTREMELY GOOD news to ehar tehya re considering the REV after saying they are done with GC, GBA and arent considering DS.
