KDR, I don't see how that is possible since that same information  and the history of circumventing sony's copy protection was published in information week.
I wonder what research firm would decide to take on this project?

Actually it's not illegal since Sony had to recall all of their copy-protected CDs and stop using their protection...and even if the protection was still being used, telling someone how to disable it is not illegal.

The DMCA says that circumventing a copy protection without the consent of the copyright holder and telling others how to do it (or giving them the means to do so) constitutes a felony. You can ask Sony to tell you how to remove the copy protection but they will only help you with the rootkit, the Cactus Data Shield, which this method also applies to, is NOT included in that permission. So disabling the CDS protection IS A FELONY. Of course it's illogical and outrageous but that's why everyone but the RIAA/MPAA wants that f#cking DMCA revoked.

And I don't think Sony approves of THIS method so it may still be a crime.

You know, I don't want to defend Sony on this one, but...

People keep saying "What's the harm in downloading music?"

It's like pirating software... The more people pirate, the harder it gets to use for those of us who legally purchase our software.  Now music is working the same way?

And you can't really blame the record/software companies for trying to protect their rights - I mean, do you blame your neighbors for locking their car doors at night?

Ah but what about fair use rights, if i own a CD I should be allowed to use it anywhere I want, including rip the songs to my Ipod and even make a backup copy to protect against scratches.  This was one of the reaosns i hated the lawsuits against dvd xcopy, if i own something I should have the right to make a copy of it and use it on my media players.  

In addition the manufacturer has no right to invade my privacy or gain control of my system at will, and don't bring up the whole, but it was in the Eula argument, they know almost no one reads the whole Eula, if you're going to try something like that you'd better make it clear and in big huge letters that no one can miss.

In fact Sony's actions make me more likely to use alternate methods to obtain their media, P2P, Bittorrent, etc.  Just because its safer to my system.

Personally I hope this costs Sony billions.

What they're doing isn't locking their doors, it's installing an automated gun on the roof that shoots anyone within line-of-sight because they may be potential car thieves.

Don't forget that the actual car thieves have all sorts of ways to remotely disable the automated gun, so only the innocent get shot.
