Random idea: Bio ID
« on: March 24, 2005, 11:35:49 PM »
Just a random idea that popped into my head today:

You know how games like SSBM track your stats, right? Per username and everything? Now if you have a 2 player game and you play with more than 2 players you're going to hand your controllers around quite a bit, right? Makes stat tracking kinda impossible unless you want to have the player select a username every time they get handed the controller.

Now I was thinking what if the Rev had a fingerprint scanner (even a crude one, this isn't about data security) that would allow you to link user names/accounts (with included preferences, of course) to their fingerprints and switch them with one touch of the pad? Of course I have no idea how long it takes to scan a fingerprint but if this could be implemented cheaply and quickly that'd be a nice feature for all those party games Nintendo is so famous for.

It would be a $1000 controller, and you would have to wipe off the scanner pad before each scan, then there is scan time and
load time.  I think you are better off with a simple directional button, and a menue to re-select a user name.

Is "START" , "SCROLL",  "A"  really all that time consuming?

Fingerprint scanners cost nowhere near 1000$, you can find them on cheap mice and USB sticks. The price could be bumped down by using a lower quality one since you only have to select the fingerprint that's closest and not go absolutely sure the print is identical to the ones stored (as you would with security scanners because errors are critical there).
And yes, that selection stuff IS slow when you pass the controller roughly every two minutes. It's also a matter of convenience, instead of having to think about which one to select, you touch the scanner and be done with it, no reading required.

Did you ever play MK DA or Deception? You could switch profiles really, really fast on that without backing through any menus as I remember.

Well, then mandate that as a standard, kinda like MS is doing with their global profiles .
