Next Gen Pikmin
« on: December 03, 2004, 05:25:10 PM »
Every time I think about next gen I think about updated graphics and endless boring realistic racing and sports games, but while I was playing Pikmin 2 I was thinking "holy crap this game is awesome" then I thought of Pikmin 3, and that it would most likely be on Nintendos next home console. I pictured in my mind what it would be like, commanding hundreds of pikmin through incredible lifelike environments with a more advanced camera and everything actually looks just like it would if you were a 1cm tall spaceman controlling lots of tiny Pikmin through a small garden. I had a "whoa" moment, Pikmin 3 could be stunning. The FMV and the "ending" of Pikmin 2 shows how much more emotion can be put into it.

What do you guys think could be added to Pikmin next gen that isn't currently possible with GC hardware? Go nuts, nothing is impossible, imagine the Revolution can do anything. Don't get me wrong, I love Pikmin 2 and think it's one of Nintendo's best games in years, but there's always room for improvement.

With the visuals they should continue to make everything super realistic looking to contrast with the abstract looking Pikmin.  I think they could make the Pikmin look like they are done in claymation.

Most importantly to the next Pikmin is online.

Instead of controlling hundreds we should control thousands of Pikmin with many new types of Pikmin.  Are there any Pikmin that can tunnel in Pikmin 2?  What about flying Pikmin?  Really fast running Pikmin?  I really want Pikmin that can walk up any surface, even upside down.  I never liked the Pikmin that threw bombs, I always thought why didn't they just make the barrier simple enough to be burned away so the yellow pikmin could be pikmin that expell fire.  How about Pikmin that are strategical, they grow a bunch of leaves on top of their heads like a deku shrub, and then when an enemy turns around to look when it hears a noise they all drop down and look like a bunch of moss or little bushes.  You've all seen the gag in cartoons before, the villain is looking for Bugs Bunny and Bugs is hiding in a bush walking behind him.  Some Pikmin could glide, some could fully fly.  Some could be combonations of different Pikmin that result from the player's decisions on cross breading Pikmin.  Pikmin that could climb right up a tree and then glide from where they decide to jump.  Imagine thousands of Pikmin coming through the woods like an army.

I'm sure voice recognition controls will be involved in the next Pikmin.  I wonder if there will be a Pikmin game on the DS?

I don't like the space dude that we play as.  They need a new character to come discover the Pikmin.  Some character that could be more marketable to older gamers as well as young gamers.

A new controller featuring mouse functions or wireless tilt sensors in addition to traditional analog sticks and face buttons will allow for better control over the characters.  For one, the camera would be better.  You could not only direct the Pikmin with voice commands but also with hand gestures if the controller can simulate what a mouse can do.

What the next Pikmin needs to do as far as enviroments is to give us urban landscapes.  Country houses, suburban areas, sewers, cities, and parks in addition to the areas in nature.  I didn't play Pikmin 2 yet, I have no idea what enviroments it has, but I'm sure you aren't trying to get a hundred Pikmin across a street while traffic is coming.

Come to think of it, Pikmin would be perfect for DS. Pick up Pikmin with the stylus and throw them around. Second screen is a map or Louie's viewpoint, so you can see when his Pikmin finish their job or come under attack.

Screen might be a little small to see alot of little things running around, though.

I can't begin to think of what sort of things the next generation might hold because I don't know what the Revolution promises to have.
However, a Pikmin DS.  I can imagine trying something new with the series.  Maybe having only a few Pikmin to control, having the interaction between Louie and maybe a max of ten pikmin be more personal, on a smaller level.  You'd have to use the two screens and the touch screen really well, hopefully, maybe something more than just a map on the top screen.  I could go into it more, and perhaps I will later, but I've got an English exam and I'm not making the game anyway

With the DS you could draw organic lines around the specific Pikmin you want to pick out.  I would expect something like that on the Revolution too.

Yeah, organic lines and Pikmin flinging would be great on the DS.

It's hard to get excited for Revolution games in general though because we have no idea of what the controller looks like. I've noticed most Nintendo games are highly dependent on their controller.

That is why the last thing that is usally revealed or finalized on Nintendo's consoles is the controllers. Because they use it as their way of making sure their games have a certin emersion to them.

Whoa, I just realized I said Louie instead of Olimar, and I didn't even mean to.  Is that a sign?  Did Nintendo speak through me, telling us that Louie would be the start of Pikmin DS?
