Anime Shopping Thread
« on: March 28, 2004, 02:11:17 AM »
Ummmm, yeah, I decided to start this thread b/c I've been looking for Aussie shops that sell anime art books and figures, and I found a very useful thread that should help all the Aussie anime fans (not counting you Mario! ) who may be looking to buy a particular anime product!

So check out the Anime Shopping and Aussie Rental Guide from the Madman forums.  It lists a good range of site, and warns of sites that sell bootlegs.  Hope you find it useful.

Also, if you want the best price for a DVD in Australia from the net I recommend you goto DVD Plaza.  It has all the DVD shops and tells which ones have the best price.

And also, Madman has recently started selling manga.  Up until now, it was hard to find, but now EB are selling them.

Weeeee! I'll most likely start collecting the Neon Genesis Manga soon, but I dislike the way they're packaged. They've been shrink wrapped to death, resulting in smooshed up corners and bent er, book...ness.. ahoy. =/

Well, I dunno. Might of just been that one EB, but if nooooot *shakes fist at nothing important*.
It'd be cool if Madman released Viz's Pokemon manga locally. I paid extreme money's for the first book ages ago, but it was well worth it. The art is awesome. =o

EB was the first store ever that i noticed had a good (hahhahahaahhhh ) selection of anime stuff - movies, figurines, etc...

Then I want to import stuff.
Then AiAi tells me about online stores based in Melbourne that sell anime stuf.
And then he tells me about The Cartoon Gallery store in Sydney! That's where I live!!!!
YAY!
I'm gonna have to go there to find out about it myself!
I really want to get into anime now, even though I have been for the past 6-7 years!

First thing I want to get is that Spirited Away Image Gallery book. Then invest in a few DVDs, and continue from there. There's only one club i know of here, and it's in UTS (Uni of Technology Sydney), and they have screenings twice a week.

Dunno what your problem is?

I got the No Need for Tenchi, Vol. 1 manga on Friday at EB and it wasn't shrink wrapped to death.  Yeah, the corner were smooshed a bit, but not to death.  BTW, I don't recommend anyone buying the Tenchi mangas, unless you have seen the 1st Tenchi Muyo! OVA series (ep. 1-6), because it continues after that, but goes in a different direction than the OVA.  The manga does recap of what happens briefly, but you are better off seeing it.

However, the domestic translation is so-so.  It is localised too much for my tastes.....

Overall, I enjoyed reading it!  Hahahahahahaha........it has bust size measurements and a funny "wetting bed" side script.    I should scan that last one.................

AiAi recommends:

Anime that has cute chicks

Lova Hina - Comedy/Romance/Shounen.  Features 6 girls who live in a all female dorm, and Keitaro, a dorky male as their manager and looks after the place.  It's a funny silly anime, that can get downright stupid at times .  You can get the 24 ep. boxset for $101.39 at FBO.com.au.

Tenchi Muyo! OVA - Science Fiction/Comedy/Romantic Comedy.  Not only is it regarded as the king of harem anime, but one of the best and most original anime of all time!  About Tenchi Masaki, a boy who hasn't had any luck with women.  To quote: "Soon, a whole bunch of girls are after him -- a space pirate, two alien princesses, a space detective... just about every female who gets to know him, wants him."  I bet you are tired of me going on and on about the show, but it is that good.  Trust me.  What makes the show really good is the quality of each episode.  There is no filler episode and plenty happen in each of them and there is a lot of character development.  You will learn a lot about the characters and develop feelings for them.  Also, the humor is really good, especially the timing of the jokes.  Plus, there is plenty of catfights!  For more info, read this review.  Love Hina can get silly at times, but Tenchi Muyo! can get even more sillier and you will be amazed at how far the writers where willing to go!  You can get the 13.5 ep. collection for $74.64 at FBO.com.au.

Action

Cowboy Bebop - Science Fiction/Comedy/Adventure/Drama.  There's nothing original about Cowboy Bebop.  But the way it is done; the style, the music, everything is done really well.  About space cowboys (bounty hunters) who will do anything for cold hard cash!  You can get the 26 ep. boxset for $112.20 or $125.86 (*is confused*) at FBO.com.au.

Naruto - Adventure/Comedy/Shounen.  If you are willing to give your boardband connection a good workout and willing to play catch up (at time of writing, the show is up to ep. 77/78), Naruto has plenty of action, ninja style.  The pacing can be slow at times, but some of the fights are awesome.

There are way more action anime, but I've only listed the I found really good.  People say Trigun is great, but I found it to be only "good".

NINJA SCROLL IS A MUST FOR ACTION BECAUSE IT HAS ROCK DUDE, AWWWW MY HEAD! *SPLIT*
And like any good anime, it's got random scary hentai moments. *THUMBS*

You might want to check out Akira and Ghost in the Shell too.  They are both highly acclaimed movies.

...although I found both to be average.

Well, I dunno. Might of just been that one EB, but if nooooot *shakes fist at nothing important*.

I dropped into EB last week to get vol 2 & 3 of the No Need for Tenchi manga, and vol 2 was shrink wrapped to death.  One corner was bended so bad, I asked the staff if they had any more in the back, no, so I refused to buy it.  All the others, including the EVA were fine.
