Why is he so popular?

I don't get it.  I don't see what he has done to gain the popularity.  Story-wise the most I have heard from him was when I awoken him and when I fought HoJo with him in my party and thats it.  During battle I will admit that he looks cool and has powerful limit breaks useful mainly for boss battles. After a while although his limit breaks are powerful it kinda defeats the purpose of the RPG battling.  He just attacks and the turn is done for the whole battle and it makes the battle easy.  

I also heard some talk about how people prefer him over Cloud and Squall (FFVIII).  You know I haven't played FFVIII but Squall is the main character and I don't understand how it is possible for anyone to think such.  Also Cloud and his mind problems is just too damn amazing for me to put someone who hardly talks and did anything spectacular over him.
