Problem accessing websites
« on: January 17, 2004, 04:41:22 PM »
For some reason or another, I can't go to some websites. I've tried going to them on Opera, Firebird, and IE, I've tried dropping my security levels as low as possible, I even tried disabling my antivirus program, on the off chance it was causing some sort of problem. Nothing has worked so far. It's not just my computer, either- I can't access the websites on my parents' computer either. It's possible my ISP has blocked the sites, but they've never done anything like that before, so I really doubt that's why I can't get to them. Can anyone help?

Either the websites you're trying to access are down, or indeed your ISP has blocked them.  Often they'll block websites that generate lots of traffic temporarily in order to save money - it's been done with my ISP before.

Give me the sites and I'll see if they work.

I was wrong, my ISP did block the sites- I used a little trick that works at school to get around blocked websites (going through Babel Fish's webpage translator), and it worked perfectly.

One of the sites is www.suprnova.org, which is understandably blockable, but I didn't think it was popular enough to tip off any ISP's. Besides, I don't like the idea that my ISP can block any site on a whim at all- if mine wasn't the only one in my area offering DSL, I'd switch in an instant.

Mouseclicker, how exactly do you use Babel fish to get to blocked websites?

mouse_clicker, suprnova has multiple mirrors to bypass exactly what you're talking about.

Try refreshing until it works. Servers are randomly chosen.

It's really quite simple- I assume programs that block websites are actually just blocking the URL, and going through sites like Babel Fish's webpage translator doesn't reproduce the same URL, it should bypass the block.

ib2kool: Go to Babel Fish, and then in the area where it lets you translate an entire webpage, type in the address for the blocked website. It should work- it does for me.

Paladin: That's what I thought, considering the nature of the site, but I haven't been able to get to Suprnova for about a week now, after trying innumerous times. I'll try again, though.

mouse_clicker> That site that you mentioned, which I also happen to use, has an insane amount of transit. Also there might be alot of users in your area that use that site so maybe that's why they cut it off.

That's weird... my ISP back home does the same thing... one refresh is usually enough to deter it for suprnova though.

Gotta love our ISP's and their respect for freedom. Wouldn't want people making up their own minds about which sites they'd want to go to.

Caliban: I live in Kansas, I doubt Suprnova would be down in the area even if EVERYONE around here were on it.

Paladin: I refreshed about 50 times and got nothing. :/

Sometimes when the site is not wanting to load, I use the extension .tk(mirror site) instead of .org.
