DDR for a beginner.
« on: February 29, 2004, 03:25:08 AM »
the time has come for me to get an NTSC ps2 + some form of DDR, with such a huge selection i'm stumped as to which version to get first, with no way to rent or even play the arcade versions i've got no real way to test it out for my self, so basically i want to find the version people seem to think is the best or one that would be good for a beginner.

damn beatmania 1 whet my appitite for bemani :\

If you're getting a PS2, I personally would suggest DDRMAX. It's loaded with a lot of really great songs, including some of my favorites, like I Like To Move It, Rhythm and Police, Spin the Disc, and Candy- it shouldn't be that expensive, either. You can also get DDRMAX 2, which has about as many songs. On the Playstation side of things, I'd suggest Konamix, and that's about it- the original DDR release for the PSX has too few songs to justify its price.

On what difficulty? I can full combo it on Beginner and almost on Standard. I can't even hope to pass it on Heavy yet.

Stepmania. Opensource DDR clone. Apparently all the DDR songs were released for free, so this seems legit. I'm running it on non-DDR songs, though, there are enough of 'em out there.

I could if I tried on a few songs, but I'm generally happy with getting a B or an A, or an AA if I happen to get one.

On light and standard, down to 26 greats on heavy

All of them are pretty darn good - although I'd get one that has 'nonstop' mode with or instead of oni/challenge mode, as you can get good enough to get into nonstop faster. DDRMAX2 US and DDR EX JPN both have these, right?

I know for a fact that DDRMAX 2 USA has Nonstop mode, and I'd assume DDR EX JP would, too.

Super: I'm not sure about that. I heard those were really released for free. Either way, they're not required and you can run it on fanmade songs only.

But the key is, people are blatantly stealing someone's idea.  They aren't even modifying the DDR concept at all.  If you made a game, tried to sell it, and then the open source community copied that game...  Would you think it was legit?

If they don't release DDR for the PC they have to expect this to happen... Might not exactly be legal, but you cannot exactly say the idea of pressing buttons at the right time with music playing in the background is something that unique... Heck, the first people I'd go sue are the Britney's Dance Beat developers, a shoddy game with a really bad interpretation of the DDR gameplay tarnishing the name of dance games. Also, while Stepmania imitates other dance games as well, all seem to differ only in the directions displayed (DDR has up/down/left/right, something else has diagonals, then you have udlr+center, then... you get the idea), so I have doubts there's a fair game going on in that sector...

They did release DDR on the PC.

Regardless, Dance With Intensity and/or Stepmania is played more because you can have all the songs (and for free, however illegal).

Hm, DDR on PC you say? Have to look for that, never seen it in stores or PC magazines... Or was that US-only?

You could only get it at Fry's electronics in California or something like that. In any case, it was super limited availability, and also it sucked

How is DDR for the x-box in comparison the PS2 one, my wife wants one of these real bad, and I would like to get the best (opinion) one of the bunch.

well, i don't know alot about it but i do know it features downloadable songs in the form of service packs (they are upto #3 i believe) so if you were looking to just get the one game that would probably have the most 'value'

PS2 versions still are superior in that they have the larger selection, service packs or not.

Well, we went and bought the X-box version on Friday Night (DDR Ultramix). My Wife and I have never played this before, even in the arcade, so we had no idea what we were in for.
THIS GAME IS THE HARDEST I HAVE EVER PLAYED, and one on the most fun.
In the first hour we learned that we have little to no coordination, and apparently have no ability to get any.
We still are in training mode, and have finally moved up to speed 2 in light mode and I still have trouble getting better than a B most games.
To top it all off, my legs hurt like hell this morning.

that's what i was like when i first played Beatmania (similar premise, use a keyboard (five keys) and a turn table instead of a dance mat) i was totally owned by the game, but now a month or so later i can finally do most difficulties, really poorly, but i can finnish 50% of the songs, nothing like a good challenge eh? ^_^

DDR is one of the easiest games to pick up and one of the hardest to master. The first time I played I felt ashamed that I couldn't even pass 1 foot songs without my friend playing to keep me alive. Now I can play four 9 foot songs in a row and get a C or better on all of them. It's crazy how fun the game is even when you suck at it, though- I played maybe 2 songs at the arcade before I decided to buy the homer version for my PS2.

Aw man, reading this thread makes me wanna play game.......

Lately, I've been very lazy when it comes to working out.  Maybe DDR will bring new life to exercising if I ever get to play it.
