Renting Gamecube Games
« on: August 06, 2003, 02:33:26 PM »
i'm kind of wondering what the availability of renting gamecube games is for everyone else, mostly becouse until two weeks ago i wasnt able to at all. none of the stores in my town carried gc games, all the while continuing to stock the ps2 and xbox sections. finally a store opens up that rents gc games and they have 10 games that consists of titles like top gun and shrek. not being able to rent games would turn away alot of potential buyers of the system in my opinion, so i'm curious as to what the situation is elsewhere. i do live in a fairly small town, but ps2 and xbox games are in every video store so why not gc?

I'm in the same boat as you.  There is only one place I know of that you can rent games.  I went there once and compared to the X-Box and PS2 there were very few GC games.  And not only that, the cost of renting a game for 1 night was nearly $10.  Mind you, I bought my GBA SP there for the cheapest price I've seen.  (Brand new too)

Pretty low here. We got a video renter just around the corner (EUR1/day/game), but their selection of GC games is REALLY limited (mostly launch games, a few bad ones that came later). It's not like I rent games anyway, but I learned there that I don't like Rogue Leader.

The situation here is going from bad to worse.
Microplay, which had the biggest selection by far has said it is clearing out all its Nintendo stuff and will no longer carry anything from Nintendo, either for rent or sale. Their reason was horrible sales, I was told they rent and sell more PS1 stuff than nintendo, go figure.
My local blockbuster manager has said as of a month ago they will only have one of each available Nintendo title, and that they will only select a few nintendo titles to carry, so the selection there will really go down I am guessing.
These are the only 2 places, out of about 15 that even caryy gamecube stuff.

My local video store recently added a whopping TWO Gamecube games to their shelves... Enter the Matrix and Backyard Football......
........
Needless to say, I haven't rented from there since I rented Kirby 64 a year ago.

i guess this would explain why gc games never make the top ten rentals. i can only imagine the amount of console sales that nintendo is missing out on. really, what casual gamer would pick up a gc without being able to rent games for it? at least it sounds like some of the stores in other areas at least tryed to carry gc games. none in my area even gave it a chance(until now). i imagine the store that just opened probably wont rent them for long either, unless they happen to get some worthwhile games in. i know i wont be renting the games that they have.

It's hard to find places that cary GC games where I live too. And the ones I know of have way too many copies of one game. At one place, they have like 20 copies of Zelda: WW, which I've never seen all rented out. They should've just bought a few copies of WW and tried buying different games for a better selection. To the eyes of a buyer, this makes it seem as if there are few games for GC. That's the main problem I see here.

I think one way that Nintendo could easily solve this problem is for their next console to make a deal with Blockbuster so that they can get a good rental presence right off the bat.  Some sort of "rent it and get $5 off if you buy it" promotion could help Nintendo's rentals and could raise awareness of Blockbuster's recent practice of selling games instead of just renting them.

Where I live there is only one store that rents any video games whatsoever, it's just a regular general store. They have over 50 super nintendo games, over 30 regular nintendo games, around 60 n64 games, around 40 playstation 1 games, 5 gameboy games, 10 gameboy color games, 20 some gba games, a little over 30 sega genesis games, 8 sega saturn games, 30 some dreamcast games, about 50 ps2 games, about 40 gamecube games, about 20 xbox games, they also rent out systems and movies and it costs 7 bucks for either a n64, ps 1 and 2, dreamcast, gamecube, or xbox game for a week and your only aloud to trade a game in for another once. all other types of games are 3 bucks for a week. The huge downside is that there is only one copy of each game.
