The September Release Date was absolutely impossible. They had to delay it, code stolen or not. The stolen code added maybe 2 months and a good explaination.

It's good to know that you're an expert on Valve's progress, KDR, enough so that you could make accurate business decisions for them.

Even before the leak they didn't hit gold status early enough to allow for the game being shipped to stores before the old release date. People were waiting for gold to be announced, but it didn't come. At some time they noticed it was already too late to meet the deadline with manufacturing, shipping, etc. That's when the release date was declared impossible.

the game may not have hit the stores on the 30th but it could have been streamable

(thats the way you get the game when you get a new 9600 or 9800)

Even if Valve wasn't going to be able to meet the original release date, you can't blame the delay until May soley on that. In fact, I'd bet they intentionally delayed the game longer than necessary in order to finish everything that needed finishing, and that they'll probably release it sooner than May rather than later.
