Yeah, but this was common knowledge 8 years ago, yet the game still sold for cheap back then. The box and manual were still expensive back then, because people knew how scarce those were due to being a rental.
Hm, perhaps it's that the N64 is now old enough to be considered a classic retro console in the same league as the NES? Maybe people are starting to get nostalgic for the system and there are an increasing number of collectors? That thought sure does make me feel old, though... and collectors and the high prices they pay have never made much sense to me.
The N64 is pretty old. We're three generations removed from it now. N64 games are now older than NES games were when the N64 was current.
While age will naturally make certain titles rarer and more valuable, I think the VC had a major effect on prices. They really seemed to jump around the Wii years. While the VC in theory should bring prices down since it makes these games easily available it seems to have raised awareness of retro gaming. Younger generations are more familiar with games from before their time, which is great from a historian point of view, but shitty if you're hoping to get a great deal on a rare game. I got Star Fox Super Weekend 10+ years ago for FOUR BUCKS. The game is worth hundreds and the store was selling it for LESS than "normal" Star Fox. The store just didn't know how rare some of this stuff was but they have since caught on and the holy grail stuff is now priced accordingly when it shows up. Everyone is just more aware of what games are rare or in high demand. And it depends on the console. The games for old Nintendo systems are all up but Sega stuff in comparison is still quite cheap (except Saturn games) and the PS2 is currently just seen as old so the prices are really low right now.
