That's not true. The Genesis ones had actual platforming in them. The problem with more recent games in the series is they act like the series was always about going full speed all the time and build them that way. The marketing for the old games may have centered around that aspect, but the games weren't nearly that way.

There is some platforming, and I'm being exaggerating a bit, but it's still mostly just hold right on the D-pad and jump every now and then. Sonic has just never been my thing - sure it's cool to go real fast, but then you pass through entire levels never even noticing anything about them. The Casino Zone levels were the only ones I ever enjoyed. The music was good though.

Just looked at some super secret new footage (e3) for this game and I must say this game is really starting to grow on me. It doesn't hurt that the TVshow looks awesome and that maybe rubbing off on my impression of the game.
