Gameboy Advance SP light
« on: July 03, 2003, 02:47:25 AM »
Hi, I'm new, so be nice ^_^. This one is for the people that have played with a GBA SP.

It doesn't really bother me but, anyone noticed when you have the light on the gba sp, the colours are a little flushed? They are not as nice with the light off . I guess this is to be expected with a front lit screen over a back lit one. It doesn't really bother me, as when you play with the light on for a while you just get use to it and never even think of it. It would be nice though if there was some control over the light intensity. Would there have been much trouble to do this? Also, why didn't nintendo fit in a headphone port.... argh!

Besides all this I love my gba sp and I got the onynx, black one. It's so cute. I don't understand why people complain about the handling, I have quite big hands and I find it a pleasure to hold. Damn it's so sexy >_<. My first game I bought zelda, of course I played it and finished on the snes but I just had to see it on the little screen. I'm actually a bit stuck, been so long since I have played it . Oops, im going off topic, sorry

The games look great on my sp, I havnt really noticed any colors being flushed on mine. The headphone requirments just wouldnt fit in the sp, so they made an adapter for it.

If you have trouble gripping it like me there is a molded plastic grip you can get for about $6 that slides over the sp. you can grip it and it makes the buttons easier to press if your hands are big.

Though wouldn't you agree the colours are a bit washed out. Compare it with and without the light, it almost makes everything a bit more blue. It's not that much difference but it would be nice if it was backlit.

I notice it on the store demos when I play games like Metroid Fusion- the colors look a little washed out and pale. I use a lamp to light my GBA.

don't listen to anything mouse_clicker says about the SP. He hates the SP because he can't afford to get one.

Anyway, the SP is not washed out. The colours are appear slightly different with the light on, but washed out is not the correct description. In any event, the effect is most noticable with older games.

What is happening is not a washing out of the colours, but is in fact because GBA games have been designed with the original GBA's shoddy screen in mind, using extra bright pallettes and so forth. If you were to suddenly play them on a good quality backlit LCD you may well see the same, or similar effect to what you see on the frontlit SP.

Holy crap- now I don't want one because I can't AFFORD one? Thank god you're here to check my finances, Actor, because even *I* didn't know that. As a matter of fact, I've got roughly $200 in cash- I'll email you a picture of the roll, if you'd like. For god's sake, I own 18 Gamecube games and 8 PS2 games, on top of another 8 or 9 GBA games- I have 140 games in all. Since when could I not afford an SP? I don't like the machine because I think it's a waste of resources and money and HONESTLY think the colors are a little washed out. It happens with almost any light, Afterburner and wormlight alike, so don't think my opinion on the subject is because of a lack of money. Jesus- must've taken you a couple hours to come up with that one.

Also, anyone had trouble with dust between the cover screen and lcd screen? Without the light you can't see it, with the light you can. I thought at first I had a couple of dead pixels, but they are smaller than a pixel. The first gba sp EB tried to sell me had a dead pixel and they swaped it for another. Never notice it when I'm playing though. Sorry, I just get so damn picky about these little things.

As far as I know, you're the only person on this board who hates me, Actor. Discontent will only win you the same in return. : |

Smadte: Tell me how you would handle a guy who lives to insult you every chance he gets? You're really telling ME how *I* should act on the internet?

noface: I've heard quite a few people have that problem, but I'm sure Nintendo will replace the SP if you send it in.

mouse_clicker, I don't hate you. Why should I hate someone I don't even know?

I call you on your facts, as you seem to really enjoy spreading misinformation about the SP every chance you get. In fact, you spread a lot of misinformation about a lot of topics, and I as a responsable net citizen lend some context to your opinions so that people will not be led astray. You have made it quite obvious that you have an irrational natred for the SP. I belive it was you who also criticized it because it was an "ugly un-original square". With and argument like that, how can you go wrong?

To everyone else, my apologies for taking this off topic. Let us now continue some actual discussion, shall we?

Misinformation? All I've said are my opinions, except in this instance, where the colors DO look washed out- even you admitted it.

Alright, let's stop our little feud here- it's pointless to argue over the internet. We'll only look like bigger geeks than we already are. I'll stop offering up my misinformed opinion on the SP if you stop bashing me every chance you get. Truce?

both isssues of light intensity and a headphone jack were probably just due to space and price constraints.  the button to turn the light on/off is relatively cheap compared to a rheostatic device to control the brightness, similar to the volume slider.  i haven't personally opened up my GBA SP to see how much room there could be for a headphone jack, but i would assume there isn't much room left inside that sweet little package (don't forget about how much space the battery takes up).  I've also never designed anything on that level, or where space was a concern, so i'm no expert, but i hope it helps.
