Linux users?
« on: September 18, 2013, 10:22:36 AM »
For my Software Engineering class my team is working on fixing bugs and feature requests in FileZilla, which turns out, is a pain in the ass to work with in Windows (or the compiling instructions are just outdated and missing several steps possibly), so I installed VMware and Ubuntu 12.04. I haven't set up the environment for FileZilla yet, but I've got to say I'm really digging this Ubuntu. I'm thinking about changing to a dual boot system (Windows 8 came with the laptop) and then probably reversing my setup and running VMware inside of Linux with Windows 7 or 8. Only things that don't exist that I need right now Visual Studio and Unity, and of course I'd miss out on all of those Humble EA games I just bought (unless some of them are available on Steam), but Eclipse, Unity, MAME, most emulators, etc are available. There is a bit of a learning curve, but I am studying computer science, so I think making the switch would be beneficial to me.

My brother's laptop is on Ubuntu 1204 (the last non-PAE version) because it's very old.

I'm still incredibly new to this, but I'm pretty sure I already like it better than Windows. I installed Java, and instead of all of that setting up environment variables and set path bullshit, I just type "java" (or javac, etc) and it's there.
