Have Nintendo's Downloadable Services Been Unfairly Stigmatised?
« on: December 20, 2012, 06:59:55 PM »
I have more than my fair share of problems with Nintendo's downloadable platforms (be they eShop or VC/WiiWare). Those issues, however, have rarely been with the quality of the games themselves, but rather with Nintendo's policies. I thought it odd, therefore, when I came across the following statement in EDGE's recent review of Fluidity: Spin Cycle.

'But otherwise this is an unusually clever, polished and robust eShop release'

Overall the review was very positive, but this statement in particular stood out to me as being a little backhanded. I mean, what's so unusual about it? For as many issues as I have with Nintendo's digital services, I truely believe that there are a not insignificant amount of top-tier games available on them. As was seen on NWR's own top 10 eShop games list recently, there are some fantastically clever, robust and polished releases on the eShop; Certainly enough that it should not be thought unusual that there is yet another one.

What do you guys think? Was this just a slip of the tongue or do you feel some reviewers still have misgivings about the quality of releases on Nintendo's downloadable services?

Frickin lazy writers. nobody does their homework  There are PLENTY of great titles on every version of Nintendo's download services.

Snark in online journalism in general is an easy, lazy writer temptation. Hard for most to resist.

I haven't read the rest of the review, but that sentence by itself doesn't necessarily indicate that the "unusually clever, polished and robust" applies to "eShop release" as much as just a "release" that happens to be on eShop. Or even that "unusually" applies to "polished and robust" rather than just "clever." The sentence is just ambiguous.

Very true. The way it read to me at least, however, was kind of shocking.
