Wii U Transfer App Experiment
« on: November 28, 2012, 06:05:19 PM »
I wonder if the Wii U transfer app would work betwwen two normal Wii units?     I ask because it would cutout Nintendo being the middle man when it comes to transferring Wii data to another Wii. It could work if the Wii U enters Wii mode to transfer the Wii data to its own system memory. All someone would have to do is take two blank Wiis and download the transfer app for both. Then buy a NES Virtual Console game and see if the data will transfer from Wii A to Wii B. It is worth the shot to find out. Someone like UnclBob would be great for this experiment.

No, but it won't work.  If you've done the Wii to Wii U transfer, you'd know.  It's two different programs.  One sends and can only be downloaded on a Wii.  the other receives and can only be downloaded onto a Wii U.  If you had some way to download the receiving program onto a regular Wii, then it *might* work - but if you could do that, you are probably set up to download all the stuff to your Wii you want.

If it is not too much trouble then try it and find out for sure and then report back.

Try what?

Loading the receiving program onto a regular Wii?

You'd run into some kind of piracy concerns there.  If I'm not willing to illegally load the Wii Speak channel onto one of my Wiis, I'm really not going to do this.

All I am proposing is to take a save file for a Wii game saved on a SD card and trasnfer it to the internal memory of a Wii, or purchase a simple NES game for a Wii that has already had its contents switched to the Wii U (and thus a blank slate), and see if the transfer app will allow memory files to be transported from one Wii to another.

Won't work, the shop channel is smart enough to tell whether it's a Wii or a vWii running on a WiiU.

Also, people have tried installing the WiiU's vWii channels on their Wiis and none of them work and won't appear in the menu screen, even the instruction manual channel. Installing the vWii system menu on the Wii also doesn't work and the vWii's IOSs do not work on the Wii. Using a NAND 're-director' or an emulator with a vWii NAND dump and installing over the vWii's system menu with an older Wii one lets the reboot/instruction channels to work but the transfer channel just takes you to the shop channel which spits out an error saying "This software is incompatible with this console".

So yeah, all possible ways are blocked....

Perhaps I am confusing what I have in mind with dishonest homebrewing, which something I do not condone. Now, after someone has used the Wii U transfer app once the account associated with that Wii and all of its licenses are then transferred to the Wii U. However, tthe blank slated Wii's sho channel could still be utilized under a different account name and thus allow new licenses to be created when VC and Wiiware games are bought. The Wii U transfer app should still be usable to place these things on another Wii U, right? Now, What I am saying is take something like a backuped Wii game save found on a SD card or a VC title purchased with a new account and see if those will transfer over to another blank slated Wii, not a Wii U. This is perfectly legal and involves no homebrewing.

The game save would likely work.

The VC/Wii Ware title would not work.

Would you be willing to see? All it might cost you is 500 Wii points and a few minutes of your time. If there is a chance that your property will be damaged then by all means do not go through with it. However, there is a vested chance that we could transfer from Wii-to-Wii much easier.

Heh, try something that won't work and it'll only cost you $5.  Where's the harm in that? :P
