Wii U and multiplayer gaming
« on: June 07, 2012, 06:07:19 PM »
People were complaining about multiplayer gaming on the Wii U, but I think the Pro Controller solves that dilemma. It has everything the GamePad has, minus the screen.

4 shoulder buttons
A B X Y buttons
2 analog sticks
D-pad

Yup, that just about covers everything.

The Wii U uses the following controllers:

- Wii Remote with Nunchuk
- Classic Controller Pro
- Wii U GamePad
- Wii U Pro Controller

That's a lot of options for multiplayer gaming. So I guess that settles it then?

It didn't. The problem was the idea of asymmetrical gameplay. It was kind of a short sighted idea that mostly worked in a party game type setting. Take that in to more traditional games, and you have a problem. Having one player with private screen in Madden to select plays with, while the other doesn't makes the asymmetry an unfair advantage. Sure, both players could just use the Pro Controller, but then again you could just play the damn game on the PS360 you already own. The key feature of the console could easily be a game breaker in many local multiplayer situations, and the Controller Pro doesn't solve that problem.

You can use 2 GamePads on the Wii U. Reggie confirmed it at the press conference.

You were saying how people WERE complaining about multiplayer on the Wii U. I assumed the complaint to which you were referring was the one controller thing seeing as it was literally the only relevant complaint and you compared the Wii U Game Pad to the Controller Pro. I was simply rebutting your argument about the controller pro fixing that particular problem.

Having two gamepads is fine. I can't really see too many situations where there's four player competitive situation that would muck that up; although, there are a few.
