Sakurai: No Plans for Kid Icarus Sequel

Fans should not lose hope, however.

A sequel to Kid Icarus: Uprising is not in development or planning stages, says director Masahiro Sakurai.

In an email interview with IGN, when asked "if he and his Project Sora team had created such a rich, lasting universe so that it could easily be returned to in future projects," Sakurai said "If by ‘lasting universe’ you mean to ask if there's a sequel, the answer is no.”

Sakurai further elaborated that the decision was made “because we pushed a lot into the game in order to let people have this short yet deep experience, but the novelty of that would likely grow thin in the next game. For now, my thought is that perhaps we'll see someone else besides me make another Kid Icarus in another 25 years.”

He's obviously busy working on Smash Bros, so a new Kid Icarus wouldn't be coming from him anyway. Nintendo will probably find someone else to take care of the franchise.
TVman is dead. I killed him and took his posts.

Retro Studios. Sorry, but I had to do it. A Wii U version of the game would be nice.

The universe and characters were for me the best parts of Uprising. I'd love to see a sequel done by another team. I'm kind of glad that Sakarai won't be doing one though.

Not terribly surprised by this. Sakurai is working on 2 whole Smash Bros. titles which will keep him busy for the next 2-3 years. I don't think we'll have to wait 20 some odd number of years for a sequel to Uprising even if Kid Icarus doesn't become Nintendo's next Zelda or Mario. If a different team handles the next game, I wouldn't be surprised if they went in a completely different direction. That might actually be a great approach. What if every new team that handles the series goes their own way with it?

I don't know if I want a sequel actually.  At least not the WiiU/3DS generation.

Because it would wear thin? That's why I like devs like him. He's not immediately thinking "cash cow sequel". A funny statement considering he's beginning work on what are essentially the fourth and fifth Smash Bros. titles, but it makes sense. ;)

Yeah,  I like KI:U a lot and I hope it becomes a classic and sells throughout the 3DS lifetime, but I do think its a series that needs some build up before getting a new game.

On the Smash Brothers part, all the ones after Melee Nintendo insisting he make one is more of why he's doing it.  I'm surprised he can bring that much passion still to the series.
