If we're talking games I've never played I have a small amount of mostly retro games. I don't really get to choose when a retro game purchase takes place. I just check out my favourite used videogame store once a week or so and if something I've been looking for pops up, I buy it. So I got both Shining Force and Phantasy Star IV about a week apart and due to the length of those games I have yet to have sat down and played either one. They're RPGs. It isn't like a 10 minute quick gaming session is going to work. I have to pick a time where I've got a few hours (and those times often go to new games). My NES is on the fritz so any NES games I've bought lately have remained unplayed. I ordered a replacement connector but it seems to have been lost in the mail and I've emailed the store about it. I have 2 or 3 NES titles I have bought since then and I have not played them because I currently can't.
I have only one current title unplayed: Sin & Punishment for the Wii. The reason it is unplayed is that I got Skyward Sword for my birthday in December and then got S&P and Kirby's Epic Yarn for Christmas (both were titles I wanted but had put off until finding them cheap). I haven't beaten Skyward Sword yet and I've only played a bit of Kirby and S&P has not yet had a chance to be played. For Wii time Zelda gets priority.
What I have noticed is that when it comes to current titles this is not an issue. If I find I don't have much free time and there is a game I'm currently into I just won't buy the next new title I want until later. I don't however have a choice with gifts and with retro games if I pass up on one I want I might never see another copy for years. It's easy when I have complete control of when I get the game but is otherwise hard. S&P is the first time EVER that a new game has sat on my shelf this long without being played. Of course it will probably remain unplayed for one reason: Xenoblade. With my backlog you would figure this would be a lousy time to get a new Wii game but when Xenoblade was announced it didn't seem like something I could put off and be able to find easily a few months later. Again, I don't really have control over the timing of the purchase.
I have noticed that when people share their backlogs Atlus games are common and that makes sense. The assumption is that an Atlas game will become rare very quickly so one has to get it when the opportunity comes up, even if they currently don't have time to play it.
Now if we want to talk backlogs of games I have not completed, ****, that list is huge. I own enough games I haven't beaten yet that I probably could never buy another videogame again and still have enough newish videogame content to satisfy me. Someday I'll probably have a wife who will find this thread and throw that statement back in my face.
