well, I don't think I had even heard of a Clockwork Orange until 2005. The thing is these movies were already 20-30 years old by the time I watched them. They didn't get any t.v. play on even premium networks like HBO. So, there is no advertising for them. Then you finally get some word of mouth stuff going on and its like "i should watch these". The main reason I wanted to watch it was because I liked The Shining, so instead of renting it I just bought it. I still haven't watched 2001 Space Odyssey. Which is a lie. I rented it and got delayed from watching it. Then I was watching it and fell asleep. Then I woke up and looked at the time and I had to rush over to the blockbuster and return it so as not to get a late fee. Didn't make it. Never rented from that blockbuster again. Its been on tv, but I always see its in the middle, and I don't watch movies from the middle.
Joe Dirt had a massive marketing campaign when it came out in 2001 when I was 17. I don't remember if I payed to watch it at the movies, but probably not. I think the family ended up renting it.
Heres an awesome thing about the Matrix. When I went to go watch it, I hadn't seen any trailers or any previews for it, so I had no idea what it was going to be about. My brother had just wanted to go to the movies and I didn't mind going so we went. It was the first night playing so there wasn't any buzz yet. So im watching this movie about hackers, and then it suddenly turns into a crazy dystopian sci-fi movie. Didn't expect that at all. Most pleasant surprise ever. Sometimes its better to watch a movie with no expectations.
