Professor Layton Movie Coming to USA
« on: July 02, 2011, 01:56:02 PM »

Viz are set to release The Eternal Diva this fall.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/27059

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva has been picked up by Viz Media for a US release.

The news comes accompanied with an Anime Expo announcement that the fourth Bleach movie will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray in December, whereas the exact date and nature of Layton's distribution will be "revealed later".

It's still unknown if the English voice cast from the previous UK release of the film will remain intact, or if Luke will be redubbed by Lani Minella, his voice in the American version of the games.

To me, it looks like it would be cheaper to just use the UK dub. However, maybe there will be licensing kerfluffles.

From what I've read on the movie, it is a nice story of puzzles, twists, supernatural beings, and insane set pieces. In other words, properly Layton.

My understanding is that the movie is part of the official Layton canon, so I am glad it finally got picked up for release here.

Great movie.  I already imported it and will buy it again.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

Nintendo needs to shut this niche distribution to North America down!

No! Not my anime! Not after Japan finally opened taps to streaming.

Yep, the movie is indeed part of the series canon - it's told from present time Layton (first three games) continuity, yet it's set between the events of Layton 4 and 5 via flashback.
I personally prefer the US voice of Luke, even though popular opinion shows that his accent isn't as accurate. If they've redubbed him, I'll gladly pick up a second copy.

So were they waiting until after Layton 4 came out to release it, then? Sure seems like it.

I wonder this will translate. The games are good...but not sure about a movie/anime.

The movie seems to have gotten good reviews based on the UK release, so I have hopes for it. I do hope they use the voices from the North America games though just for consistency sake.
