sonic advance 2
« on: May 02, 2003, 10:23:57 PM »
Picked this up the other day for my son, gotta say it brought back memories of the genesis versions.
Seems  a very good 2d side scrolling game. If you like sonic then it is worth the buy .

one thing though is the chaos emeralds are a bitch to get.
Any hints or clues, I  am trying to help unlock the garden so he can hook up to the cube with no luck yet.

I've only been playing Sonic Advance 2 for a couple of days now, (great game, really reminds me of my past) so i can't really help you answer your question, haven't tried to get the emeralds yet. But whats with Dr. Robotnik changing his name to Dr. Eggman? maybe it happend in another version of Sonic that I missed, havent played any sonic since the mega drive, so forgive me if i'm asking a really stupid question.

Unfortunately, the way they made you get to even try for the Chaos Emeralds in this one was pretty inane, you have to tag all seven Special Rings (they'll look different than the regular rings, with a star in the middle, and make a different sound when you pick them up) in a level and finish the level. This basically means you have to take an "Optimal" route and use a lot of memorization, it's the only really poorly-designed thing about Advance 2 I'd say. You'll just have to use a FAQ (GameFAQS) and practice it. Once you get to the special stages, they're pretty simple, and you'll be able to pass most of them once you get oriented to them. The only thing that changes about them are basically the ring and booster locations.

Edit: I just checked GameFAQS to make sure, the FAQ in the Sonic Advance 2 section labeled "Ring Locations Guide" should be just what you need, check that out.

I think the name change happened on the Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure.

He's always been called Dr. Eggman in Japan. Starting with Sonic Adventure, Sega dropped the Robotnik name in North America as well. I wish they handn't, it's a better name than Egggman is.

i agree about the name change.

i liked it better on the Genisis days, but i gotta say this game feels like a suped up version  from that time period except for those special rings, they slow the game play down .

i have now gone to the special stages but the 1st one wants you to get 300 rings and it seems i am almost out of rings to collect at about 200 and then i run out of time. any hints?

i think the level design is far better than sonic advance (1)

but, still not up to par with sonic 3 or S&K...

regardless, great game, I haven't really tried for the special rings though.

Generally you only go for the emeralds once per character, it's not like the previous Sonic games where you could casually go for the emeralds along the way. But the game saves that you have them.

The trick to the special stages is collecting a string of rings and trying not to break the chain much, you get multiplier bonuses that fill up your quota fast. It helps to smack the little "5" ring circles as you do it, too.
