The smash-hit mobile game will find a home in consoles.

At the Social Gaming Summit and Virtual Goods Summit in London, Rovio's head of North American business development, Peter Vesterbacka, announced through his Twitter feed that their hit mobile game Angry Birds will be released on the Wii, Xbox and PlayStation Network.  Multi-player, currently under development, was said to "be like old school Worms games". While no release date was mentioned and no other details were offered, the team has high hopes for the future of the franchise, stating that Angry Birds will be "bigger than Tetris".

Angry Birds is a puzzle game that was released for the iPhone and iPod Touch devices on December 10, 2009. Since its release the title has sold 10 million copies and has appeared on other touch-based devices. The objective of the game is to retrieve eggs that have been stolen by a group of pigs.

I haven't played Angry Birds, but I think saying that it will be bigger than Tetris is an exaggeration. Tetris was a phenomenon that people still remember today. Angry Birds would have to be HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE in order for it to be bigger than Tetris.

Like, selling millions of copies when it releases on new hardware huge? Because it already does that.
Bless you, my child.

I did some research and yes, you're right Adrock, thanks for catching that!

It looks like a paid, non-ad supported version will be launching soon so I will retract my statement until that point.

"Free game 'sells' millions" does show that there is interest in the brand, but of course doesn't make the point I was trying to!
Bless you, my child.

I get that it has "sold" a million copies. That is impressive for a small development with a brand new IP being released on a largely un-tested hardware. I may be being more cynical than usual here, but stating that the game will be "bigger than Tetris" just reeks as overconfidence as this may be their one big title and that's it. Tetris has a legacy in gaming that NO ONE will erase. This is basically my "don't count your chickens before they hatch" ideals at work. It's like if a popular local indie band walked up to someone and said "WE WILL BE MORE POPULAR THAN THE BEATLES" simply because their first concert sold out in one local bar.

That doesn't mean they can't enjoy their success, but humility is important in the road to success. This is just my opinion, though.

Alexey Pajitnov made one big title. It's called Tetris. Overconfident or not, Rovio making one game that people the world over really enjoy may not be such a bad way to go out. We can't all be Miyamoto.

Or if one of your band members says, "We're more popular than Jesus now."  :-X

If you want to go over the top, you have to make it the title of an album.

Do they mean as a retail Wii game or a WiiWare download? I would like to think WiiWare, 'cause the game is not exactly graphically intensive or anything like that.

Regardless, Angry Birds is a good fit for the Wii platform. The controls should transition over nicely to the pointer -- hold button, drag out trajectory, release button. Having said that, I hope they don't keep milking it with re-skins e.g. Angry Birds Halloween and Angry Birds Christmas, like they have been on the App Store.

Tetris has appeared on more systems than any other franchise, I doubt this game will come anywhere close to that.
