Twitter wars
« on: June 01, 2010, 12:15:27 AM »
I only signed up for Twitter a few months ago (as I had no interest in it before), but I go through various periods where I update it on a regular basis and then not at all. Anyone here have one? Mine is @TJSpyke

Today I just had my first "war" with a fellow Tweeter, two of them at the same time actually. One of them was a Conservative (I am a very big liberal on most issues), it was over Glenn Beck and the Iraq war (specifically Bush's comments to justify it, but I don't want to get too political here). I am no stranger to heated Internet arguments, I have been blocked on Wikipedia almost 20 times for it, but this was the first time on Twitter. It's always fun (although sometimes very annoying) to get into arguments with someone online, especially when you know they are serious and not just joking. Anyone else get into a serious argument with someone online?

This is the only warning I'm going to give.
Attacking big-name people in the political circus and attacks on politicians, past or present, will not be tolerated on these forums.  TJ, your post contains material that is outside the limits of these forums.  Please fix it, or I will.  To anyone who wants to reply, keep it non-political.

I edited my comments to take out what I think you considered attacks (I didn't think they were). It's kind of hard to talk about politicians without being political though.

Perm, easily the first. I won't say what I really think about Glenn Beck (and everyone else at channel he works for), but I pretty much agree with Keith Olbermann's views on him.

You seriously didn't think that calling someone an "idiot" or a "liar" is an attack?

For your second comment, there's a simple solution to that - don't talk about politicians here.  This rule has been in place, and with good reasons, for a long time.

I would say though, that a certain tv personality has never held public office, so actually isn't a politician.

When it's proven someone DID lie, how is it an attack? If someone was proven to have raped someone, is it an attack to call them a rapist? Besides, I only said his comments were lies, I didn't call him a liar (saying someone is "acting childish" is not the same as calling them a "child", for example). As for the idiot comment, maybe that was over the line.

As for politics and politicians, that is a very interesting topic. I can understand it can get heated sometimes, but that shouldn't be a reason to have a blanket ban on it.

Anyways, maybe we should veer away from politics by sticking to why I actually started the thread.

Calm down. No profound or convincing argument can be made in a 140 character limit. Or at all on the internet for that matter, since every time does write a good one, its tl;dr.

That's actually one of the great things about arguing on Twitter, or just Twitter in general: the character limit eliminates walls of text.

Blast from the past:
Twitter seems so stupid to me, most social networking sites do. I have a MySpace page, but it's the generic looking one and I have rarely ever used it. I have a Facebook page but only because Activision had a contest in 2006 where you could win a Wii if you joined their official friends list.

Directing the term "idiot" towards someone could get you banned!  But if it's on Twitter then it's fine.

@poster:

If you use Twitter, you're an idiot.
