Extra Life #5: Ninjatown
« on: May 27, 2010, 11:19:24 AM »

Extra Life is a weekly column focused on giving games a second chance. Each week, I'll look at one game that I missed. It could be a game that received universal appraisal, or one that seemingly nobody played.

This week's entry is Ninjatown, a Southpeak-published title developed by Venan Entertainment. It originally came out on DS on October 28, 2008. The latest game in the series, Ninjatown: Trees of Doom, recently came out on iPhone and iPod Touch.

Ninja Consultant is one of my all time favorite character designs.  Too bad I don't like tower defense.

I played the demo back in 2008 and quickly grew bored of the game--like you said, it's a by-the-numbers tower defense game with some cute artwork thrown in.  I'll just quote myself from 18 months ago.

I played the six-level demo and was bored by the fourth level.  All the levels play alike.

Since the enemies follow pre-determined paths, you just need to find choke points and place as many ninjas as possible.  For the most part only the orange (heavy) ninjas and the ones that took out the flying devils were necessary.  I occasionally used the snowball ninjas (to slow fast opponents) but everything else seemed rather pointless.

But the strategy on level 6 was the same as on level 1!

    * Find the first choke point
    * Load it up with orange ninjas
    * If anything breaks through your first choke point find a second one and add some there
    * If you see some flying devils are coming up in a couple rounds add a couple sniper ninjas
    * If you see some fast devils are coming up in a couple rounds add a snow ball ninja and a couple black ninjas
    * If you choke points become full of ninjas, start to spend the extra cash to power them up
    * Don't bother with the training dojos because more ninjas are always better than stronger ninjas
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!
